| | Seriously-does it "go bad"? and how long does it take? I've got a bag of rice, I'm pretty sure is at least 2 years old~ I'm planning on making something this week with rice but I'm pretty tempted to dump the old stuff and buy new(but that just goes against the coupon/saver bone in my body!)

| | It should be fine. You could try cooking up a little bit and see how it does, but that would be mostly for your peace of mind.

| | Does Rice expire, collapse, and implode?
Everytime it plays Texas A&M.
(I simply could not resist.)

| | Sniff it. Rice can go stale after a few months, depending on how it is stored. Stale rice is worse than no rice.

| | One other point: check for bugs. If it's really old and hasn't been carefully stored, you might have some freeloaders in the bag. |

| | Eeew... we once bought a bag of flour, only to open it and find crawly little worms ... they looked like tape worms. EEEEEW! Thanks for bringing back memories. |

| | Ggggaaackkk - moth maggots. Bringing in imported rice or other grains from the health food store (or asian market) does it every time. But you can tell just by looking at it. Even if you don't see moths or the little wormy things, you'll see fine webs that stick stuff together. Throw it out instantly and check everything else in the cupboard
I've heard that you can prevent that by putting the package into the freezer for a few days.
I've never noticed rice going stale, but I usually store it in tight plastic containers.

| | Rice go stale?? Not in my house!
WE go through about 5 kilos of rice each month - and that's just the Chinese white rice. We also use another 2 kilos of brown basmati. Can you tell that we like rice?

| | Rice can go bad, it just takes a long time for it happen (not sure how long the time is though). Actually honey is suposedly the only food in the world right now that can't go bad over time. I heard this tidbit of information on the radio a couple of months ago, not sure why I remebered it, but it's suppose true.
