| | As with the blood drive, I feel that it might behoove us to start gently recruiting friends, coworkers, and family members to the team. Hell, they might even want to join EA

| | I hope I'm not repeating a link, but I just read a fairly interesting article on the Genome Project from about a year ago: http://www.findarticles.com/cf_dls/m.../article.jhtml

| | | WBEZ radio (Chicago) has a daily feature called Odyssey, where all sorts of really interesting topics are discussed.
Today's topic was how proteins work inside our cells. I got to listen to it over lunch. If you missed it, you can listen to it via the magic of RealAudio.
Just go to http://www.wbez.org/services/od_raaug01.htm#010828
and listen to the show for Aug 28. |

| | | Does the first gene ever created on a system always take an enormously long time?
Almost two weeks ago, I started up the client on my work computer. Since then, it's worked on the gene every night after I leave work. (I shut the client down during the day because my processor is taxed enough as it is!) Until last, I was lucky if it would process one sequence a night. Over my 5 day weekend, it did something like 10 sequences, and that was with no one using the computer! Last night when I went home, it was just starting sequence 21 of 30. This morning, when I came in, it had finally completed the gene and started on the next one. (It was all the way up to sequence 8 of 30.) I've been away from my computer most of the morning, so I let it run. Now (2 hours later), it's up to 12 of 30.
Why did it take the first one so darn long?
BTW, when I looked a bit ago, the team was up to 190th position! |

| | My husband is of the opinion that the letters right below the line
Sequence X completed:
represent how long the gene is. The first one we worked on at home had a really long string of letters and it took nearly a week to complete (our computer has lots of performance issues). The second gene we got had all of eight letters after each sequence and our computer zipped through that gene.
So perhaps it depends on the size.

| | | The team is up to 177th!
The Lab, Redlass's target of choice, is 12 spots in front of us. We're going to need another member if we're going to catch up with them!!!!! (Any volunteers?)
Also, the crazy kid Tipu looks like he's about to run over poor Taurusmoon. He's been zooming along. Exactly what kind of computers is he running down there? |

| | Margaret, your computer will go through 30 series. You're on series 1. Once your computer finishes crunching its numbers, it will automatically upload the results and download the next project.
You will then show on the list.
Welcome aboard!! |

| | Well, on my laptop, I am on series three of thirty and am 60% of the way there. Actually, I was 90% done with this series, but then decided to turn it off for a moment, thinking it would pick up where it left off. Oh well, live and learn.
On my other computer, I have been running for some time, with very few other apps running, and I am stuck on sequence 1 at 10%. It seems like about an hour has gone by. This computer was just completely upgraded last week to my parents definition of a "good" computer (ie, one not outdated) and Win NT is running. My laptop is at least a year old and running ME, and they are both on the same cable modem, so I don't know if my regular computer is stuck or just horriblely slow for an unknown reason.
Oh well. And update on the friend I referred... this is too challenging for her. She couldn't even figure out how to download the thing I later found out If I can get her to do it, I will definately have to go over there and install it for her. I will keep trying though.
And this whole program goes to show that one person CAN make a difference! |

| | Boy, I didn't realize how long this would take. I had to shut my computer off while I was at work (long story) and wasn't able to resume until 11 last night. I just started on 24 out of 30. It feels like I will never finish! Geez, I can't imagine how Rubicon01 got 116 done so far, and Amy has 106! So fill me in... who is Rubicon? Is that Tipu, or is he A2plusB2? And who else has a username which makes it hard to identify them?
I will be easy to find, once I get my first one up there |

| | Oh, also, I am curious how often the updates are... I read every three hours some place.... is there a schedule... like 12:00, 3:00, 6:00... etc? Or is it more like an Epinions type time-frame, where there are patterns, but those patterns can change at whim (as in hourly, daily, weekly, updates) |

| | I've found that unless I'm signed on to the web my results do not automatically upload. I've had to manually upload the results several times. |

| | Cable modem... I am basically always on.
My results were uploaded while I was out picking out carpeting and tile for the house Now I am officially part of the team, and I have 5 carpet samples and 1 tile sample (I was decisive on the tile) laying in front of me, and a smile on my face with a sense that I got a lot accomplished today |

| | New stats every three hours. You can usually see them on the Stanford site at 10 or 15 minutes after and on the statsman site at 30-35 minutes after. |

I've had that happen before, and clearing out the bad data allowed me to get started again.
BTW, does anyone know who mom2nat is? (I'm assuming it's not one of hypotenuse's kids!) |

I'm amused by the latest stats - we've crossed the Abyss and are well on our way to marching over Scotland. After that, we can conquer Atheism and make losers out of the Winners.
Deb
who knows very well that we're all winners

| | Thanks Deb, I've been watching the statsman one and find it a valuable resource.
I am hoping that there would be a graph (like the statsman one) which compares not teams, but teammembers. Like one with a line showing that I will be in 14th place by Tuesday, or something I mean, not that I want to compete with any of you or anything. |

| | Well, Magenta, I know some people have dropped out because genome@home was causing their system to crash, but other people seem to have stepped up to take their places.
Joubert set up the statsman page to show us graphically how we're doing, as a team, relative to everyone else. Not sure how he did it, but it looks great: Statsman page
Maybe another graph could be added to that page showing estimated future production for each member of the team?
Or, failing that, one could take the figures from the table and create their own graph, and post it every once in a while.

| | Margaret: Thanks for the explination.
I've been wondering if I'll ever make it up on the board, or if my username would ever be recognised...the main site still acts like it doesn't know me....but I won't take it as a personal snub just yet...hehehe. By the way, don't thank me for joining, thank Amy...she PM'd me last night and gave me a smack on the tush to get in here and join...LOL!
I hadn't even started reading the thread, and I really would have joined if I knew what was going on. I missed the main message on the EA homepage (I have my browser bookmarked to the forums page, so I always missed it.), and after seeing how many pages were in the thread, I didn't even start to read through about what was going on in here. If it wasn't for Amy's great leadership, I probably never would have joined the team effort until it hit another, newer thread.
Personally, the whole concept is way to complex for me to understand, and has been WAY over my head. But, for the benefit of the cause, (and the EA team!) I'm happy to participate, even though I don't have a clue as to what I'm doing.
Speaking of which, do I have to upload my info to be shown on the board, or does the genome DOS window automatically do it for me after each completion? Just curious. For right now I'm just running the program hoping I'm doing everything right.
Flame:
I was wondering who that was when I peeped in on the team stats....it figures it would be you...hahaha!
:p

I think that they knew that hardly anyone would do it if it were any more complex.
It's fun to watch the numbers increase. The team now has 4 people with over 100 genes done. The team is in the top 75, and we've been in the top 30 or so top producing (genes per week) for the past few weeks. It's very cool to see what we can do together! |

No, it doesn't involve genome@home, but it's nice to read about cancer research getting such positive recognition. Who knows maybe next year there will be a PS - assisted by EA members
