It is in control panel, power management. However, I think you might be going a bit overboard with this. The genome program is very good at finding every available resource.

But Robin, before I started tweaking, I was producing roughly one protien a day. Now, I am doing one every four days or so. Something is very wrong.

Plus, I like doing Genome. Until my computer slowed to a crawl, I was competing with a lot of people. I used to be up in the top ten, but then I had to remove Genome from my other (faster) computer. This was despite the fact that I started way later than a lot of other people. Then I got this computer to get out of sleep mode when I wasn't using it, and started clawing my way back towards the top ten (I was in 14th, soon to be 13th). Now I am in 15th and plummetting, because I am barely producing anything. It's taking away all my genoming fun.

Well, I hope it was your power management.

It might be that your "clean up" left ini and registry references all over the place. PC ends up wasting a lot of time trying to find something what is no longer there...

You might need a help of someone better qualified: as I said, there are places I don't like to play with. If it happened to me I'd probably format the hard drive and reinstall all software but it's a pain and a last resort.

You know what's strange -- I went to Control Panel >> Power Options (closest to Power Mgt. I have) and it said it wouldn't work, that I had to go to Toshiba Power Saver. I clicked on TPS, and nothing happens. Nada. I even did right click, open, and that didn't work either. Oy vey! It won't let me touch my power management settings.

I guess I have to wait until it crashes when I'm not using it. It NEVER crashes unless it's in standby mode, then it crashes left and right. If it is in standby, I am shocked it hasn't crashed yet though. I have a feeling that's where my problem lies.

You might notice that goldrush has a new userID.

I think this may be the record now, for # of user ID's.

He has goldrush, goldrush2 and Goldrush.

All this because he's now running the client on (I think, at last check) 5 computers. 4-850MHz models and one 400 MHz model. A few of them are sneakernetted.

The only reason I began using JoubertWork is that I must shut my network connection when I'm not in the office. There was going to be too much stopping and starting, but because my work machine is more streamlined than my home machine, the crunching goes faster.

I certainly understand the desire for multiple ids if the PCs won't be on all the time.

I just jumped aboard!

So, anything special I need to know about shutting down or logging on/off the internet?

Thanks!

Clap!

We are very happy to have your help. I'm sure you will find it fascinating (I did!) how important the spare cycles of CPU can be...

The filter program is very stable and there are very few things one needs to do.
Ctrl-C saves progress and closes the program.
If you are not on internet while a gene is completed, it will waste some time trying to connect. After I log off, I usually shut down the "Genome@home" and start "Run off network". The only difference between the two (as far as I'm able to tell) is that "Run off network" continues to create further sequences of the same gene. Then I'm back on line, I switch to "Genome@home" again. Sometimes, you may want to run "Upload results" just to make sure that the saved work was send.

Hey everybody: we are crunching over 5,000WU per week now!
Let's give a nice round of applause to the new team members!

Thanks!

I appreciate your help and information!

One additional question, where do you find "run off network". I only have the genome@home icon(shortcut) and when I click this, it loads the filter as usual.

Seems I might be missing something? Thanks again!

You need to go through the Start menu to Genome@home directory. There should be six programs; besides the three already mentioned there is also uninstaller, clear bad work and configuration options. One thing to remember: the "Run off network" looks very similar to the main program but it does not upload data...
Happy crunching!

One more for you all....

How often do the genome@home people update their stats for the individuals and/or the teams?

Thanks.

Magick, its usually every 3 hours or so. Sometimes problems arise. They try to keep the genome project running smoothly and let the stats slide sometimes when problems do arise. Stats always come back, and we've always been credited all our genes while the stats were down.

So glad that we have two new members!

Unfortunately, we're going to be passed soon by HA.

Keep crunching. Maybe we'll keep them away for a while!

Okay, I am finally signed up...(despite my good intentions, I kept forgetting!)

Now for the questions....

1. Do I have to have my internet connection running the entire time I am running the filter?
2. Do I need to do anything else besides have the filter running in the background?

Sorry if someone else has already asked and been answered...I looked through George and Grace's instructions and some of this thread, but didn't want to plow through 900+ posts

Lynn

Lynn,

1. no
2. no

It can upload the data whenever you happen to log onto the net. The filter is all you need to run on your PC. Just make sure our team number is in, and you will be all set

Welcome Lynn!

You need the internet connection only to put work and download new set. While you are actually crunching the 30 sequences there is no need to be on the net.

The program doesn't require any particular attention. Ctrl-C saves and closes the program...

Some other questions and FAQs you can find only 2 pages back when Kim joined the team. Happy crunching!

Thanks Amy and Robin! I'll go check out the previous page.

My PC probably isn't too fast, but I guess every little bit helps! My dad runs the seti program at home that Janice talked about in the first part of the thread, I'm assuming this is much the same.

That Genetals team that Margaret referenced is pretty amusing....

Okay, I've completed my first sequence (subsequent one seems to be moving along more quickly...maybe just my imagination?)...do I need to do anything so that I'll show up on the Team EA page?

There is a bit of a delay between the time you upload the data and the time it gets posted.

Your name should show up soon.

Well, I think I finally figured out why I'm not showing up.

You have to manually upload this info, right?

Sheesh, sometimes I am SOOOOOO blonde.

No Lynn, it uploads it for you the next time you are online. And then it gets a new protein for you to work on.

If you are still not showing up over a day after you sent in your first gene, I'd start reading the beginning of this thread. I believe when Redlass signed on, she was not getting credited for her genes. It turned out that she had to change something to make sure she was getting credit for her team. I think it was her anyway. I know it was towards the beginning of this whole long thread anyway... within the first 7 pages or so

It might be something you just have to change in order for to get credit for your work.

If you only have one computer running genome, however, it's still a nice tool. It can estimate how much time you have left on the current gene, and has all kinds of stats for you to think about

Have fun with it, if you download it!
The link posted by Margaret has a piece of software that will give you some better idea what's happening with your crunching.
The Spy is the best tool to keep track of your production and if a gene has not been uploaded it will show. In such case you might have to do some tweeking or manual upload...
