| | Gemome@Home | | A few months ago, Epinion Addicts held a blood drive in order to try to help the communities that we live in. Working together, we were able to get quite a bit of blood donated. (I am sure Sara will be along later with the exact number that escapes me now.)
Recent events have motivated the EA team to look at another project to try to make a difference outside of cyberspace and the limited world of Epinions.
I ask that you read this and then return here for any technical support that you might need getting started.
This is a project that you can ALL participate in. All that is required is a computer and an Internet connection.
Amy

| | So all I have to do is paste the html code? I went to the read this link and it is Greek to me.
Hubby and I went to our town's huge blood drive last week. My daughter is pre-med and asking for her 21st birthday that everyone she knows give blood. I do regularly anyway, but this was a good time since she'll be 21 in 1 month. My iron count was too low to give! and hubby almost fainted afterward - it was 100 degrees that day. But we will give blood anyway - I will try again...anything I can do to help anyone in anyway, I will including stem cell research (oh oh..did I mean to say that) ok, so if all I have to do is paste that, I can manage that.

| | Jo, the code in your profile will just help encourage your friends to join.
As far as the software, I am hoping Grace and George will be kind enough to answer questions in this thread as needed.

I believe that there is another program called Folding@Home that is somehow related to this one. The difference is that it is run by a commercial venture. We didn't choose that one because we thought it was rather poor of a commercial group to be asking us to give our processing power for free so that they can profit from it. However, they might have a Mac client. I'd have to check. |

| | I agree with Grace about the Folding@home project. I ran both and the Stanford project felt more pure somehow. I know people are now clutching their chests and wailing, "Joubert said something anti-business?" but the truth is that the same program exists at Stanford without them having to squander resources.
For those who like numbers - I believe there are some folks around here who enjoy crunching or otherwise reveling in them - our team has almost cracked the top 300 of 800+ plus. And Amy and Grace are getting darn close to cracking the top 2000 users themselves.
C'mon and join in. My computer is right now working on the 100th gene model Stanford has sent me. I've been doing this program for a couple of months so you can see the immense capacity these things need. |

| | I'm so glad you all thought of this. The installation was very easy, thanks to good directions (the CTRL C bit would have totally escaped me otherwise). My computer is working on its 12th sequence of the first batch of 30 sent to it. It's kind of exciting to see the progress my computer makes each day.
I'm running the Genome program and my husband runs the Seti program on his computer (he has cable modems and leaves his computer on all day).
This is a great idea--thanks for making it easy for me!

| | How is everyone doing with this? Any problems getting it installed and running? Some of the mods have noticed that there is a delay in when the work is completed and when the results show up on the web site.
Anyone completed any genes yet? Design anything cool?
I've got a neurotoxin and a mating pheremone to my credit.

How do you kow that? Does it show up once your data has been uploaded, or could you tell when the job was running?
I've finished two between last night and today, and I just started a third.
The site says my username doesn't exist and I'm not listed as a member of the team. When I check my config file I can see both nicholmere and our team number.
Grace put a post in the Yahoo group asking about problems experienced by myself and and some of the others who aren't showing up. From what I can tell everything they've said I should do I've done ... I figure I'll just wait another day or two to see what happens.

Meanwhile, here's the link to our team page for everyone else: Team EA at the Genome Site |

| | I'm in the same boat you are, Katherine. I've completed three genes since yesterday, but I haven't shown up as a user or on the team yet.
Makes one feel antsy, no?

| | Bridgette, go into Reconfigure User Info and see if team 1765000174 shows up. I looked at your user page and didn't see the team number.

| | Ah! Now that might be the problem--I put the team name (with letters), not the team number. So I guess that means the proteins I've done so far won't count for EA?
Ah well, as long as they get done.

| | Hmmm. OK. I put the number in the config files AND the team name EASILYADDICTIVEdotcom is showing up on my user page (redlass, no caps). But I'm not on the team page yet.
Here's what I've designed so far though: - Cro Repressor Insertion Mutant K56-[Dgevk]
- Rubredoxin
- 1etn
- Cytochrome C-553
Total units: 39.7
And I'm way behind Katherine at 8101.

| Mine shows the team name as a clickable link and yours doesn't. Perhaps (Joubert. is this right?) you have to upload a protein that counts as a team statistic before it. Before you upload any more info though, you might want to check Reconfigure User Info to see if you show:
user name [redlass]
team account number [1765000174]
as well as the other info.

| | Hate to sound dumb here, but... where is this "reconfigure user" option? Is it on the Genome page?
I've gone into the config file that was installed with the program and replaced the name with the team number. Is that what you're referring to? At the moment, I'm working on one of those really slow proteins, so it will be awhile before it uploads another one for me to see if the change has taken place.

| | Bridgette,
Look in your Windows Start Menu for Genome@home. Reconfigure User is in with that list of programs.
I'd still give it a little time though. I think it took a couple of days for the system to recognize me. Now it probably wishes it never did.

| | Ah-ha! OK. Found it. But I'd have to shut down the program that's currently running and it is in the middle of a gene (then again, it saves everything as it goes, doesn't it?).

| | It does save as it goes, but it takes a little while to start up again once it's been shutdown (Ctrl-C btw). Not so bad as to make it a big issue though.

| | Bridgette, you shouldn't have to shut it down. Just type yes when it asks you if you wish to continue. You can have two windows open at the same time.
I haven't had any trouble starting up again . . . since loading the program, I've had to do an emergency reboot twice (not related to this program) and it's picked up almost where it left of both times.

| | 1) Yes, you're safe to reconfigure at any time. Everything you've processed will be saved.
2) Yes, you've got to upload at least one sequence as a team member before showing on the team roster. And then it still might be a while unless you obsessively check the Stanford board, in which case, it will take just as long but will frustrate you more.
3) Sara and I are brilliant. Not only did we post the same message, but we posted it at the same minute. Beyond that, Sara has the ability and talent to create a picture of any of us in any unflattering way she chooses.
4) Bunch a stat-obsessed, oops, never mind... Hey, by the way

| | When you hit CONTROL-C to shut it down, how do you get it to start back up again? Other than rebooting.
I've got a mountain of software to install so I need to turn off all the extra things I've got going. But I'm only halfway through the latest thirty. Can't even wait til it's through to install.
So, what do I do?

| | The installation should have placed a shortcut on your desktop. Just doubleclick on it and it'll start right up.
If not, go through your Windows Start menu and select the Genome@home option.

| | Let's talk about the power of distributed computing for a minute, gang. Then we can all feel good about this project.
I've got a pretty snazzy system. At least it was pretty snazzy when I bought it 10 months ago. Damn thing is probably obsolete now, but it's a P3/800 with 256 meg of RAM connected to a cable modem. Lots of horsepower and good memory.
The Genome at Home project has been running on my computer almost non-stop (even when I travel on business) for over two months. In that time, I uploaded 102 genetic sequences.
In the two weeks that this program has been running on EA (first in beta with the mods and then the last week with everyone), we've created 89 genetic sequences. Four of our ten teammates are now in the top half of all users who have ever run the program. I have no doubt that Amy, Sara and Grace will use their computer wizardry skills to find their way into the top 10%, if not the top few positions. Yes, gang, they're that good, and they're that dedicated.
This is an important mission. Genetic research will help save and extend the lives of people you love, not in the future, but now. Thanks to everyone who is participating. If you haven't yet joined our team, you can find the instructions here online or feel free to PM or email me, and I will be happy to walk you through the process.
89 in only a few days versus 102 in over two months. We have the power. Let's use it.
