First, I heard the crash. It was a really loud crash, the kind of crash that starts with a bang and ends with a crunchy tinkling sound.
Next, I heard two small children gasp, whisper "uh-oh, she's not going to like this!" and scurry away.
Then, I heard the child at the epicenter of that crash - that would be #2 - come walking toward me, and he said,"Would you like a glass of wine? And by the way,you know the cafetierre you used to have?"
And then I heard #1 laughing. No, not laughing, absolutely choking-on-his-own-vomit cackling. That kind of laughing. As he was gasping, he managed to squeak out,"Physics. Momentum" and then collapse again.
When he could speak again, he explained that #2 had tried to surprise his brothers by pretending to toss the cafetierre against the counter. He hadn't realized that the glass carafe was not attached to the metal holder. Therefore, he pretended to sling the cafetierre toward the counter but pulled it back at the last minute. Unfortunately, the glass carafe kept on going after he pulled away from the counter. Apparently it was quite a sight - the carafe gracefully swooping through the air, the horrible crash, and the absolutely priceless doubletake that #2 managed. Oh, and for the record, his brothers were indeed surprised. So was I.
