...start your engines”
After our day sightseeing dowtown Nashville, the three younger Horsemen were ready for something a little more entertaining. (Like catching a glimpse of Willie wasn’t entertaining. No accounting for taste). So, we went to an arcade which had go-karts. The Horsemen were beside themselves, especially about the go-karts.
Talk about driving bringing out someone’s personality! #4 was last in line while they were waiting. He became impatient and caused a minor crash while they were still stopped. When they finally heard the bell, #2 floored it, and stalled out immediately.
Finally, everyone was going around the track in more or less the same direction, and it seemed to be working. Except that it seemed like #3 thought we said,”Golf carts”, or maybe we were just in Florida too long. Anyway, he went around once for every three laps the other boys made. He was concentrating really hard at keeping his car on the track, and was just so serious. #4 got blocked in by another boy and began yelling and shaking his fist at the other driver. #2 kept racing past #4 and sticking his tongue out whenever he’d pass, and #1 just looked totally cool. He managed a 180 by cranking the wheel really hard going around the curb, and didn’t even blink. Of course, this made #4 furious- you could hear him yelling over the engines!
Finally, for the last few laps, #’s 2 and 4 were just at it- neck and neck, swerving trying to block each other, and finally #4 tried to jump a row of tires in order to get ahead. If he’d had a horn on the thing, he would have been honking and swearing- he was really impressed by the Florida traffic. And of course, during this great slice-of-life drama, #3 just kept calmly driving along, swerving wildly and then slowly correcting his course. He is going to make a wonderful old man someday. I should buy him a hat.
