...as those who would not see."
I had a lot of errands to do today, and #1 came with me. So did Libby, wearing her little orange service dog jacket. I was having a bad balance day and needed her.
We went to the hospital for my appointment, that was fine. We went to the university to pick up some paperwork. Also good. Libby was freshly groomed and got tons of compliments, and #1 was wearing his current uniform - jeans, black t-shirt and those cowboy boots. He seemed to attract a fair amount of attention on campus. I'll have to worry about that later.
Anyway, the last thing I had to do was to get the details of my post-COBRA insurance policy straightened out, and so #1 volunteered to return to the hospital pharmacy to get my prescription. I was really grateful, and for a treat, he took Libs with him. It was hot in the insurance office, and I was headachy from the sun. So, off we went on our errands.
#1 came back just grinning from ear to ear. "Mama," he said,"the funniest thing happened. Everyone was really nice to me".
I made a note to myself to hide that black t-shirt as soon as we got home.
"No," he said, "not that kind of nice, everyone was even more polite to me than when we were down South!"
That did surprise me, as in general that is not a valued commodity here like it is there. I was glad for him, though.
He told me that this time, when he went through the door of the hospital, the security guard opened the door for him. Now, the guy won't even open the door for folks in wheelchairs- just sits at his stool and stares out the window.
After he was inside, a cute girl asked if he wanted her to walk with him wherever he needed to go. He thanked her, but said he was ok. As he walked down the hall toward the pharmacy, people kept saying,"Look out!" to others in the hallway. By this time, he was going
Finally, he got to the pharmcay- and the people in line insisted he go to the front of the line. He protested, as there was a lady using a walker, a man in a wheelchair and a lady with two small kids all in line in front of him. However, they all insisted.
He asked for my prescription, and the tech took out the form for him to sign since it was not being picked up by me- then she looked at him, said "Never mind, sweetheart, I'll sign it for you" and gave him a big smile.
As he was leaving, he had to cross the really busy crosswalk in front of the hospital. It's my least favourite place to walk - taxis drive through really quickly, people double park to drop people off, and the valet service is there- those guys seem to think they are NASCAR drivers after the big money. He waited just a minute to cross, and suddenly, one of the valets pulled out into traffic with one of the really nice cars he was parking, and stopped with the car sideways in front of two taxis to block them in. Then, he got out of the car and said,"It's safe for you to cross now. Have a nice day."
By this time, #1 was convinced that it was 'Be Kind To A Gimp' day at the hospital, or maybe free crack day instead. Finally, when a nurse came up to him and said,"Just hold onto my arm, I'm going to walk you accross the street, it's rush hour", it dawned on him. He not only had Libby ( I take Libs all the time, and only once have I gotten anywhere near that kind of help ) but he was still wearing his sunglasses. Mystery solved .
I would love to have seen everyone when he took his keys out of his pocket, got in the van and drove away to pick me up!
