WE decided to have a 4th of July picnic. At the last minute, I didn't want to try crossing the border, so we missed going to a parade in the States. I figured that a picnic would be just the thing.
For school this year, #2 did the American revolution, and the two youngest did a unit on the Declaration of Independence as well as the U.S. Constitution. All of the kids were quite excited to be the first to tell what they knew about the 4th. I was so proud of them - they really are good students, and although their interests can be ...unusual at times, they know a fair amount.
So, I sat outside eating my barbecued burger sans blackened outer shell because I let #1 cook, and asked the boys who wanted to recite the preamble to the Constitution. See, they've memorized it. Because I think it's important for everyone to be very familiar with the preamble as well as the Declaration of Independence. I've really pushed some things during their schooling, and these things are high on my list of things they must do.
Anyway, #4 jumped and danced until I let him go first. He really wanted to do the reciting - I've rarely seen such an enthusiastic child. I was positively beaming with pride. It's one of those rare homeschooling moments, when you realize that in fact they have been listening to you and that they find their lessons both relevent as well as interesting.
#4 stood up, gave us all a solemn look, cleared his throat, and began:
"We are the people, they couldn't figure out
We are the people our parents warned us about..."
