After watching 'America's Got Talent!' this summer, some of the Horsemen are busily preparing for the auditions for next year's show. #3 is especially certain that he'll win.
He's a big Brad Paisley fan (not coincidentally because his big brother is) and has realized that his major talent lies in songwriting. He announced that he intends to sing an original song for his audition. I pointed out that he hasn't yet had guitar lessons.
"Oh, that's no problem," he said,"I've already learned how to play the guitar. I just use the top string and the bottom string, because those two sound good with anything you could sing."
Ok, then. The kid does not lack for self-esteem, I'll give him that. However, I wanted to know how his songwriting was coming along.
"Oh, I'm having just one problem with my songs. I have to figure out how to make everyone tell the difference between my songs and the ones Brad Paisley already wrote."
I asked why anyone would get his songs confused with Brad Paisley's. Since Paisley is a heckuva songwriter, visions of $$$ danced in my head at the thought of #3 writing songs of that calibre.
"Well," he said,"for example, Brad Paisley sings a song called 'The Old Rugged Cross. I wrote a song called 'The Old Worn-out Cross."
I thought about that for a minute, and agreed that there might be some folks who could conceivably confuse the two songs. I asked how the rest of his song went.
"Oh, that's the other problem I'm having. So far, I haven't thought of what the rest of the song will be like."
The next day, #3 decided to be a writer in addition to being a songwriter, because, he explained, he had started writing a story.
I said,"Wow, that's wonderful! After you finish writing it, I'll print it out, you can illustrate it, and we'll save it in your homeschooling projects box!"
He looked mildy pained, and told me it wouldn't have pictures. "Because", he said,"it isn't a kid's story, it is a novel for adults, I just realized."
I asked him how he knew it was an adult novel, although asking made me twitch.
"Oh, that's easy, Mama. The novel has a lot of words that are bigger than words that kids like to read. In fact, I don't even know what some of them mean!".
Don't send cash, just send chocolate.
