| | Friday Night At The Movies! | | This is in the 'boy is my face red!' department. See, I nearly missed one of the funniest movies I've seen in an age. The boys wanted to see 'Flushed Away', but it didn't sound appealing. I thought it was going to be just a bunch of tacky bathroom jokes aimed at the 9 to 13 crowd. Or 31, depending... I decided instead to stay home and have a quiet bubblebath. Or stick pins in my eyes. In other words, doing something more pleasurable than seeing this movie.
Then, after Deb posted that letter from the Gold Star dad, I started thinking about how that dad would probably have given anything in the world to go with his son to see one more absolutely horrid movie, if he could. I got all weepy, and off we went.
The movie, in case you don't happen to have a herd of boys who can lip-sync the trailer, is about a rat who gets flushed down the toilet, enters the underworld of the sewers, nearly gets killed, meets up with a strong woman....well, the plot isn't anything wildly original. Setting, yes -plot, not so much.
However, this movie was a scream! Ok, this won't give anything away when I tell you that the only part our audience laughed at was the running gag of - wait for it - getting hit in the crotch. Or bouncing off a hard object onto a crotch. Rinse, repeat. Every time this would happen, the audience laughed so hard that we couldn't hear the dialogue for a few minutes. But, that wasn't the funny part of the movie. Well, I didn't think it was funny, and oddly enough, the boys got a bit tired of it after the first few times. The reason this movie is so darned funny is that the real jokes (i.e. the ones which did *not* involve crotches ) were subtle, clever, and for the most part, you had to be up on current events, literature, and cultural stereotypes in order to get it. Again, this won't give anything away: a frog remarks that "...I laugh at pain and suffering, as long as it's not my own - I'm French!". Of course, the boys and I were the only people laughing. A trio of snails float past on a lantern singing 'Don't Worry, be Happy'. I nearly had to be helped from the theatre at that bit. #1 laughed till he cried at seeing an old lady, a street vendor, calling,"Feed the flies! Tuppence a bag!". The obligatory Ugly American is a Texan whose t-shirt announces, "I love steak!"
The same people who brought 'Wallace and Gromit' created this movie, and it's hilarious. You should go. I'm really glad that I went, even if it was begrudgingly at first. This still doesn't mean that I regret not having seen 'Beer Fest'... |

| | Re Friday Night At The Movies! | | Okay, you'll have to explain the snails and the Don't Worry, Be Happy.
But the rest I get.

| | Re Friday Night At The Movies! | | That's just such a funny song, even without snails. I probably should have mentioned that for some reason, there are large groups of snails in the movie- cute little guys who do all sorts of funny things. Seeing them cruise down the sewer singing that while the rat hero worried just made me howl! |

| | Re Friday Night At The Movies! | | We've seen previews a couple times. Most recent was when we watched Over the Hedge. (You haven't seen Over the Hedge? Get thee to a video store!) I've been kinda "hmm," the boyfriend's been kinda "eh." Sounds like I'm gonna haveta force the issue on this one. (And he says I never pick funny movies. It's not my fault. Novocaine was in the comedy section, dammit.)

| | Re Friday Night At The Movies! | | I think I'm still going to wait for video on this one, but that's because if it isn't a huge movie with lots of special effects, we don't usualy bother to go to the theater. I may sneak off next week and watch "The Departed" because I can't get honey to go, but this one will go in my rental q. |

| | Re Friday Night At The Movies! | | I've heard good things about it. When it hits the Elvis(cheapo theater not far from here) I'll take the kids. I took DS to Monster House yesterday, he loved it.

| | Re Friday Night At The Movies! | | I decided to take the child to the theatre todady as a treat. I gave him the choice between Flushed Away and Open Season...he chose Open Season.
Knowing how much Cindy had liked Flushed Away, I was disappointed, but I'll tell you...Open Season is much the same vein...grown up jokes interspersed that the kids don't get but are simply hilarious! It was short (90 miinutes or so), cute, and really pretty darned funny.

| | Re Friday Night At The Movies! | | Finally watch Flushed Away tonight. Liked it bunches.
And did you know that you get three pages of hits on EA when you search for the phrase "Flushed Away"? You're all potty-mouths, you are.

| | Re Friday Night At The Movies! | | I'm looking for family movies. At my house I'm pretty open-minded about what I let my kids watch (yeah, you know what kind of mom I am) but when the in-laws visit we need something to do at least one evening. Now these folks have standards and pretty high ones at that. In fact, my MIL called herself "pretty holy" the other day.
We've watched World Fastest Indian with good results and My Big Fat Greek Wedding was found to be acceptable.
Oh, and her favorite sitcom is Munk? Monk? (Hey, I don't watch TV!)
Recommendations that are not cartoons. Anyone?

| | Re Friday Night At The Movies! | | Anybody seen Waking Ned Devine? That is an all time favorite of ours. Not really something kids would like but adults love it.
And The Milagro Beanfield War I saw years and years ago. Trying to figure out why it is rated R?

See, I'm not geeky.

| | Re Friday Night At The Movies! | | The Thief Lord is quite good - I think it had a *few* words in it, but not many. Very clean otherwise, and very faithful to the book. It's a "kid" movie, but not inane enough to put the adults into a coma. (Despair over a bunch of theiving orphans, on the other hand.... )

If you don't count Anime as cartoons, Spirited Away is one that everyone likes and we don't get tired of as adults. Nothing vuglar, no sex, no potty humor. |

| | Re Friday Night At The Movies! | | I was just going to say 'Spirited Away' - we love that movie. Another we all love and watch over and over is 'Love, Actually'. I know it by heart, but it still always makes me cry. And #2, my little cynic, loves it - the copy we have was his birthday gift this year since he begged for it.
I'll post a list later, since there are a lot we've enjoyed during the past year which we don't own. #2 writes them all down in his movie notebook. |

| | Re Friday Night At The Movies! | | The Last Vacation, with Queen Latifah! All of the boys liked it and I really liked it.
You've seen Cheaper By The Dozen 1 and 2, right?
Here is the list from the Horsemen:
Pride and Prejudice - #2 claims it is his favourite movie. He should know- he watches it at least once a month.
Finding Neverland - #1 gets all teary at this one.
The Fighting Temptations - really soppy sweet, screaming funny in a couple of places. I loved it.
Fly Away Home - I liked it, the boys are shrieking "No! Why do you hate her??" in the background. I still liked it.
