Last night, #1 came home later than usual. He stayed on campus, he said, to wait for the rain to stop. Because, he said, his car doesn't run well in the rain. Hmmm.
When he finally did get home, Libby did her usual happy dance, since OMG, her boy actually came home again. Because, you know, he could always just leave and forget to come home.
She barked and wagged and wiggled, jumped on him, grinned in his face, all of her most appealing tricks. She got no response. She did it all again, and #1 murmered "Good dog", and sat down on the couch. Libs sat down, cocked her head to one side and looked absolutely stunned. She tried climbing up into his lap, but he still didn't even make eye contact.
This made her frantic. She began bringing him gifts - some socks, a teddy bear, a squeaky possum, a bone, another bone, a couple of books, a pillow, the heating pad, a new bag of catfood - nothing seemed to work. She emptied out her water bowl and brought that, but he still didn't do much besides give her back the dripping bowl. When she finally tried to grab my laptop to use as a bribe, I had to put my foot down, and Poe hissed when Libs tried to grab her by her scruff. All for nothing. She finally walked over to Dixie and started a nasty fight and bit her poor sister, who was as startled as I was.
I was starting to Suspect Something.
"Did anything interesting happen today?" I asked.
I got the blank stare which is followed by the determined effort to focus the eyes. Uh oh.
"Um, yes, I remembered to eat lunch. Don't worry."
OMG. When anyone in this house says 'don't worry', I flat-out panic. But, he didn't seem upset or depressed, just....absent. Total disconnect.
"So. Whatever happened today which was not interesting - what was it?"
"Oh, nothing much. My friend says her best friend would like to be set up with me. I've met her twice. ACtually, I met her three times, but she doesn't remember the first one. But, she does remember the next two times. So do I. Other than that, nothing happened."
Okee-dokee then, chief. Nothing at all, except for apparently falling head over heels stupid in love, or at least like. When this girl visits here, if she ever does, we'll have to warn her not to take off her shoes. I have a feeling that Libby will not be a fan.
