Doesn't matter. The software doesn't know what you've read or not. What it knows is that you logged in at time x. And, 15 minutes from that time, the cookies expire. If you leave before the cookies expire but don't click mark read, then it makes that happen. It's goofy and it's stupid, but it's not a bug.
