Fat kids in Denver get pedometers

http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/nati...d-Obesity.html
(Requires Registration... check other AP sites like TBO, too)

"DENVER (AP) -- Pedometers in the form of matchbook-size belt clips will hopefully make walking more fun for 200 Denver youngsters as part of a pilot program aimed at battling childhood obesity.

The goal is to motivate the young people to walk at least 10,000 steps a day in line with the U.S. Surgeon General's recommendation of 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week."

I wonder what brand they're getting.

Pretty cool. I wonder if I can get them for my class.

What a relief to read that article, and learn that ALL kids in the test group are getting pedometers, not just FAT kids.

Children who feel different, and particularly children who feel unattractive, don't need to be singled out any more than they already are.

By putting the emphasis on fitness for everyone, it takes the emphasis off them as being unfit.
