| | LOL, Oakland is a wide spot in the road. Property prices are good because there's nothing here - the nearest big city (Eugene) is an hour away, and Roseburg (small city) is 20 minutes away. Otherwise, it's very pretty and a great place to stop and have a soda. I've never eaten at Tolley's but I've heard good things.

They have a great community festival each August (Canyonville Days). We stopped on the way back from Diamond Lake last summer to eat elephant ears and wander through the exhibits (my chocolate chip cookies would have won first place, hands down).

| | Tom - why not go and bake us some of those elephant ears to go with the iced tea. At the rate we're walking - you should have plenty of time to make several batches for us!
Thanks - you're the best!!! |

| | Tom, this is must be a regional thing. The ones around here are balls of dough rolled out in a irregular shape (flat) and deep fried instead of baked. As soon as they come out of the fryer, they're rolled in cinnamon and sugar. Soooo good . . . and we'd have to walk another dozen miles to burn off the calories, so it's a good thing the fair is over.

Deb | Actually, that sounds more like the ones we see at our fair(s) also.
But then, 'fair food' is a specialty food in itself...:-)
(That linked recipe fits with rolled thin, and cinnamon and sugar...just eliminates the 'deep fried' part. . .which probably makes them not nearly so good...:-)

| | Well, 192.48 miles down and the road and I think we'll hunker down in Grants Pass, Oregon for the night.
There's a local Square Dance club that has a beginner's class on Sundays at 3:00. We should be able to rest up a bit and then enjoy that, no?
Tomorrow we should be able to get across the border into northern CA....I've never been to California, so I'm pretty excited!
What say we make a goal to get to Yreka, CA tomorrow - that's a good 79 mile hike from Grants Pass, so we'll need to hoof it a bit! (Or else drag our non-data sending compadres to get their miles/steps in or drag some of these weinee men who insist on poking their noses in, but won't walk )
Come on, walk this way....
Lynn

| | Fried twinkies sound repulsive! The elephant ears that I know are usually deep fried and are huge rolled things with powdered sugar. Since we walking types are diet conscious, I liked the sound of the baked ones!
Hey Lynn - great planning! I'm all for a square dance break!

| | Ummm, Lynne I've got a problem.
When we were leaving Taiwan a few years ago we had a choice of moving to Los Angeles or Rochester NY
The reason we ended up in NY is I convinced hubby and his company that I didn't have a visa to go to California........
Think I can get in the state now?

Ailsa, why did I think that dance class would catch your eye?
Fried Twinkies sounds positively NASTY. Regular Twinkies sound positively NASTY.

who has eaten maybe one Twinkie in her life and spat it out :blech:

Hey, did I find the perfect place for this group to stop or what? Here we are in Ashland, OR...home of the Ashland Vineyards
and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Darn it, we have missed the 2002 performances, and we are NOT sticking around until the 2003 ones. But maybe we can throw a few "wherefore's" and say "thee" and "thou" around until we leave in honor of old Willie.
Tomorrow, California here we come. Everyone remember to crowd around Bridgette (and I hear she could use a dose of virtual chicken soup) and keep her covered during the long trek through CA.

| | psst, Lynn, it may be difficult to get this crowd out of Ashland. I booked us into A Cowslip's Belle Bed and Breakfast.
This is one of my favorite towns in Oregon. There's much to do, even if the actors are resting.

| | My friend and her first husband honeymooned in Oregon. A lot of people thought it was a strange choice, but they hopped around from B&B to B&B and said it was lovely. I'm beginning to see just how lovely it is! May have to spend some more time out there! People think I'm strange because I really want to go to Idaho on vacation. I have no idea what there is to do in Idaho, but I'm sure it's beautiful. Maybe we can swing by there next time we do a virtual walk! Right now I'm just enjoying all of the beautiful scenery in Oregon! Lynn - can we stay longer? |
