| | Need some help calculating stride | | Are there pedometers out there that don't require you to calculate your step/stride length? Also, for a female that is 5'6" tall and walks a little more than 3 miles per hour, does anyone have a "guesstimate" as to what the stride length would be in inches?
My pedometer requires me to physically measure the length of twelve steps and divide by twelve. If anyone out there could give me an idea, that would be great.
thanks,

| | Hi Michelle. Welcome to the board!
Your best bet, if you have a hard time setting your stride, might be to start with the default setting (that's generally an average) and walk a premeasured course at your typical pace. You can adjust up or downward if you're running high or low.
My stride (2.75 at 5'8"ish with long legs) tends to vary depending on my speed. The faster I walk, the longer the stride.
However, I do believe we have a couple of people your height in the group. Perhaps they'll be around to add their 2 cents.
Anyway, do consider joining our steppers club. It's great fun and great motivation.
Hope to see more of you around these parts.
Sara

Any ideas?

| | Sorry Janice. I just noticed your post several days late.
I don't know what to think about your pedometer. But, didn't you buy it recently as a replacement for your missing one?
If so, you are well within your rights to return or exchange it for a new one. You shouldn't have trouble with it so soon.

| | Hi everyone. Please bare with me if I am putting this in the wrong place. You guys motivated me to order a pedometer. I selected the Omron HJ105 for under $13.00 at Allheart.com. I was told I'd receive an email confirmation by the site.
I haven't received a confirmation from them, so I emailed their customer service. No response. I just sent off another email. I want my pedometer. . . does anyone know anything good, bad or indifferent about this site, reliability wise?
I know it is holiday time and they are no doubt busy, but I just want to know if they received my order or not.
Your feedback via email or posted here (if appropriate) would be appreciated. Thanks.

Can anyone please help!?!
I'd really appreciate it. Thanks and Happy Holidays to everyone

| | another weirdo with a thingy on his hip | | Pookie and I have been walking for a half-hour every morning for 25 days. Sometimes we jog.
I was thinking "Hey, I ought to get a pedometer," then I remembered that those wackos at EA were talking about them.
So, I got one. Well, when it arrives, I'll have one.
....I think it's the one Joubert has.
I'll find out when it gets here.
Now what's going on, again?

| | Mine broke!!! | | I have been having trouble with my new pedometer (the one I just got for Christmas) staying cliped to the waist of my pants. Two weekends ago I was babysitting, and when I leaned over to pick up the baby it fell to the floor. It no longer counts. GRR!! I am writing a letter to the company because drops are not covered in warrenty, however, I am sad that thier clip was not good! This really irks me!! Anyone else had this problem?

May I ask what brand it is?

| | Reading through all this good info on pedometers and wish I'd had it 2 units ago - I have one of those with the unguarded reset button AND its one of those ones that is supposed to play music and talk - so annoying its never been useful. Walked all last year by myself - now maybe its time to buy another one. Weather too nasty to start yet but March not too far away. |

| | Ahh, the infamous Sportline talking pedometer. I think it is sold under the Avon label too, but it looks almost exactly the same. It was pretty accurate for me, when it wasn't getting reset. Well, and when it would come on--for some reason it took a long time to wake up in the morning.

| | I finally ordered a pedometer, and I'm going a bit nuts waiting for it to be delivered. Don't remember what brand - some deal with credit card points, but for the life of me I can't imagine how these things work. Can someone fill me in, please? |

| | Worm...clip it, walk. Reset if needed.
Oh yeah, you're going to want to set the distance thingee so you can convert steps into miles. There should be some pretty self-explanatory directions that come with it; if you still need help when you finally get it in the mail, call Sara or Amy.
Good luck and congratulations! Don't get too obsessed with the numbers however (10k steps/day is a good number to shoot for )

| | Thanks Lynn. I knew that either you or Sara would have an answer for me, but I still don't get HOW it works. You clip in on your waist, right (I almost typed waste - that would make it even harder to figure out how it works!!!)? Anyway - how does it record how far you walk - or is this just one of those things that you clip on, shut up and walk with? |

| | There are mechanical parts inside, similar to a pendulum. Each step you take causes that pendulum to swing and triggers a step count.
Most pedometers allow you to program your stride so that it can convert the number of steps you take into distance walked. For example, if you have a walking stride of two feet, each step is factored at that distance. It would take 2,650 steps for you to have walked a mile. (Note that this is an unusually short stride -- it was just easy for me to do the calculation that way -- your mileage will vary )
It will make a lot more sense when you actually have the thing in hand. Then all you have to do is read the documentation (yes, you must) and you'll be ready to go.

| | There's a little bead thingee in there (SARA, I'm technically inept!) that bangs back and forth and counts steps. When you program in how many inches your average step is (mine is set at 30" I think), it will calculate how many miles that works into.
It's math. I'm not good at math (read the blonde joke in the cafe ). I just put it on and it works. When it doesn't, I take it to the local discounter and put in a new battery (THAT I can do with no problem )
Lynn edited to say THANKS to my counterpart for having a more intelligent answer than I did
