Shin Splints

I try to walk 3 miles every day. However, I usually have to walk pretty slowly. If I go above 3mph, my shins start to hurt terribly. I am getting sick of being lapped by old ladies.

How can I improve my speed without hurting like hell?

Amy

Your shins are trying to tell you something. You have a choice: ignore them and eventually derail your efforts because of the pain. Or, take it slow until your body tells you you're ready to pick up the pace.

Also, try to avoid hills. They are murder on untrained shins.

As to the old ladies... a pea shooter should slow them down.

My wife has terrible shin splints. Here are some tips:
1. Research your shoes, it can make a difference. Unfortunately, I am not sure where to look, but I am certain the web has the resources.
2. I hate to be a contrarian, but doing hills actually helps shin splints because the foot angle is a good stretch
3. speaking of stretch, STRETCH! stretch your calves and shins by doing foot movement exercises
4. Walk on asphalt or dirt, not cement. It makes a REAL difference.

Here's a pretty good page on shin splints:

Wow, Sara, very interesting! I've occasionally gotten shin splints but had no idea what caused them and what can prevent them. I'm a confirmed stretcher from here on.
