Er - maraschinos are loaded with Red Dye to make them redder, and to make the juice red. | But that's only a problem if you're sensitive to red dye. The kid at my house who likes maraschino cherries doesn't seem to have a problem and the one who's sensitive to the dye wouldn't touch them if you paid him money.
Good, no real problem.

Is this a double-blind study as in the study comparing one group of children fed sugar and one group fed aspartame, to "prove" that sugar doesn't cause hyperactive behavior? Wow, those folks never spoke to teachers who had playground duty the day after Halloween. (Sorry, anecdotal) | I aplolgize for the sloppy rhetoric. My main point was that the researchers were assuming that aspartame would have a null effect, and so used it in the control group. I'm not sure how they arrived at that assumption.
As far as the playground duty, guess I'll stick to my own, personal home-grown observations. Number three child can drink Pepsi til the cows come home, feel more alert, and go right to sleep anyway. Drinking Coke keeps him buzzed and awake for hours. As a University student who needs to sleep when he gets the chance, he tries to avoid carelessly drinking the wrong pop. In fact, he pretty much avoids drinking pop--his choice.

| | Re: Red Dye #40 and other dyes | | Why would Pepsi relax someone, and Coke give him a buzz? Different dyes? Different sweeteners? Who knows? But I can see I'll have to watch myself with thisgroup. I'd better start doing my research.

| | Re: Red Dye #40 and other dyes | | Must be a HUGE difference. Could be possible, no way to prove it. Unless someone knows how to obtain the formularies for Coke and Pepsi. And we're talking a can of Coke to be awake by, and a litre or two of Pepsi which to nod off.

| | Re: Red Dye #40 and other dyes | | I would say it has to be something other than the caffeine. Coke has the highest per-serving amount of caffeine in it, but 1-2 L of Pepsi would add up to way more caffeine than what's in 12 oz. of Coke.
(That's highest per-serving amount among "regular" sodas, not counting the "Jolt" type stuff.)

| | Re: Red Dye #40 and other dyes | | I wonder what 1 can of Pepsi does to him. If 1-2 liters puts him to sleep, I'd worry about his blood sugar. I get really sleepy when mine is high.

| | Re: Red Dye #40 and other dyes | | Blood sugar may have something to do with it. But Pepsi doesn't make him sleep. I think he feels perked up a little, and when he wants to go to bed, he goes to sleep just fine. At the moment, the whole family seems to be avoiding or cutting back on soft drinks of all kinds. I've stopped buying them. Number 4, who lives in Michigan, has a pop or so a couple times a week at gaming. number three is a nursing mom, and avoids caffeine because it makes the baby irritable, and sugar because it makes her feel weird. The last time she ate a really sugary dessert, she felt hung over the next day. Number 3 and 4 drink pop hardly ever, in order to avoid both mood swings and empty calories. And, no, they don't drink diet pop, either. Tropicana and similar juices in cartons are a favorite, with no added sweetener. Really nice cheesecake, well, we can all accomodate that. Fresh fruit topping please, so red sauce. Sorry, I digress.
