| | Starting volleyball tomorrow | |
I'm having one of those "what was I thinking" moments!
Seriously, I'm looking forward to it...a local watering hole has a sand volleyball league on Weds nights and some of us from the neighborhood decided to throw together a team.
The "Weston Whompers" (Dan can't play, but supplied the name) make their debut tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. CT. Think some good thoughts; I have a wicked good net-skimming serve, but I'm apt to be rather sore on Thursday as I'm just a wee bit competitive.
In fact, when the gal who is organizing it said "We probably won't win a single game" I shouted out "NO WAY. We are there to WIN!"
(and then on Thursday I'm helping build a house for Habitat for Humanity so I should be in fine shape come Friday! )

| | Re Starting volleyball tomorrow | | I'm with Cindy. I duck when things come flying my direction, which meant I stunk at volleyball. And softball. And tennis. And field hockey...

| | Re Starting volleyball tomorrow | | I actually enjoyed volleyball in PE as I was halfway good at it. But I wouldn't be joining a team at my age. Congrats, and lots of luck!

| | Re Starting volleyball tomorrow | | I usually end up brusing my hand when I serve. I'll have a big old brown spot right between my thumb and my wrist.
And what do you mean "at my age", Melanie...you're a potential roller queen, you should be able to whack around a volleyball! At least on a sand court, it doesn't hurt so much when you fall down.

| | Re Starting volleyball tomorrow | | Volleyball involves actually running around. Skating can be taken as slow as you want.

| | Re Starting volleyball tomorrow | | And screaming "MINE" at the top of one's lungs. Nothing irritates me more than someone who won't call the ball and runs into you. Or a bunch of people who won't go after the ball. Wimps.
I hope my neighbors still like me after tonite.

| | Re Starting volleyball tomorrow | | We got our butts kicked but had a good time. I jammed my right thumb, but it should be fine by morning.
And of course, the theme shout was "Sacrifice the body!" to egg someone on to dive at the ball. We did that a lot.
Games go every Weds until mid-September I didn't realize it lasted that long!!!

| | Re Starting volleyball tomorrow | | Okay, week two. No apparent injuries. I did rejam my thumb in like the first hit of the first game. But I think it's okay. Doesn't seem to hurt too bad tonite.
We lost all three games again, but we looked and acted more like a team this week. Calling, talking to each other on the court, actually came close to winning one game.
And we looked sweet in our hot pink "Weston Whompers" t-shirts and tank tops.

| | Re Starting volleyball tomorrow | | I have people from work begging for photos too. Is it the "men in pink" or the thought of me in a tank top that has y'all panting for photos?
I assure you, neither one is all that pretty.

| | Re Starting volleyball tomorrow | | Okay, we STILL have not won a game. We got close today, then the other team only had 4 players (we had six) and they were facing the sun.
The worst part was that we played at 6:15 p.m. when it was about 900 degrees outside. Thank god they hosed down the court (although I am now covered in sand, thanks to several "sacrifice the body" shots) and there was plenty of iced down beer and water.
I'm really enjoying this, and other than a tense moment tonite when I went down hard on my bad knee and I didn't know if I'd walk again, I really haven't hurt myself. It's fun!!!

| | Re Starting volleyball tomorrow | | Last night was brutal. It was so freaking hot I chugged two beers and didn't even have to pee. Yes, I drank plenty of water too.
We still didn't win, but we're starting to really look like a team and talk to each other. However, at one point, I threw myself face first in the sand to get a dig, and the guy who picked it up and got it over the net hit it outside the boundary by inches. "I THREW MYSELF IN THE SAND FOR THAT?"
It's still fun.

| | Re Starting volleyball tomorrow | | Well, we are down to the last few weeks (two weeks left after tonite's game). We STILL have not won a game, although we've come REALLY close a couple of times. I think if we ever had 6 adults instead of having to have kids sub in, we'd be better. We've already talked about doing again next year, but having better bench strength and not relying on the kids.
I took a nasty hit to the chin. Don't ask how I did that...I think I hit it and it bounced up and hit me in the chin...now of course my jaw is aching and out of whack. I will probably get yelled at by the chiro on Friday.
This has been really fun though. Lots of stories...there is one guy who just likes to fall on other people (not really, but he does it all the time). The other teams do laugh with us at ourselves, so at least they are not rolling their eyes when they have to play us.

| | Re Starting volleyball tomorrow | | LAST NIGHT. We actually had six adults instead of having to use a kid as a sub.
WE WON A GAME. Our second to last game of the season. We really did look awesome tonite.
After the second game (the one we won), the bar owner came over and gave us a trophy for Best Sportsmanship. He said "We wanted to get this for you guys for always having fun, despite (almost) never winning." That was so cool. We got our photo taken and will have it in the local rag.
The trophy will travel from home to home until next season. It was a LOT of fun, and we are already planning next year.
Maybe we'll win TWO games.
