Fired up Friday

I did it. After months of hemming and hawing and pi**ing and moaning and procrastinating and footdragging and...

Oh, I should just come out and confess.

I finally joined the gym.

(Oh God...now I have to actually go.)

And I have another thing to confess too. I really missed being at the gym.

There. I said it and I'm glad.

Don't get me wrong: I still love the Steppers Club.

I like the little muscles popping out all over my upper legs.

I like my new, fancy shoesies

I like getting out and mixing it up with the skunks at midnight.

But really, although I have the heart of a Stepper, I have the soul of a gym rat.

Now I bet you are wondering why one late fall evening, on my way to the rehearsal from hell, I stopped in and signed on the dotted line.

It's because of all of you, you silly things.

All of you running out in a frantic attempt to beat daylight savings time have inspired me--as you have so many times.

So I am dusting off my fabulous collection of spandex outerwear and preparing to mix it up with the weight machines--and the treadmill.

In short: I am ready to become the nightmare you've all extensively discussed.

I am psyched.

So how about you? Are you ready to rumble?

Are you fired up?

Tell me all about it.

ROFL!

This is not a psychic connection day.

I'm grumpy, and I'm tired, and I'm overwhelmed with the rest of my life.

However, Cyndi, your post gave me my first chuckle of the day because it so not how I feel right this second.

I'll sit back and read the rest of the pysched people and maybe I'll get myself in the psyched psychic connection.

Andrea
a little overwhelmed with life at the moment

Why do I have to feel the bonds of psychic connection to Andrea when she feels like this for goodness sake? I couldn't have picked a good day. Noooo, not me.

I still have that stupid headache - it's worse today. I am still suffering the joys of what my friend calls being "painfully female." I just feel lethargic and fuzzy and generally not happy. To top it off, I just finished a war with my plumbing and lost so I need to call maintenance

Janice, considering going back to bed

Cyndi! You go girl!

Go for me too, okay? I'm tired.

Yesterday was a day of rest for me. If you could call College Night at the High School rest. I can't believe I'm looking into colleges for my baby. I'm too young to look at colleges! I'm also too broke. Oy.

Anyway, I hadn't set out to do much exercise but it turns out that I managed to get about 6500 steps in walking to and from the school and walking the halls searching for the right rooms.

Hmmm, maybe it's time to go back to school. I'd get my exercise in that way.

I'm not sure what I'll do today. It promises to be a beautiful day. I'd hate to waste in indoors at the gym. I might just try to beat the sun with a late afternoon walk. Maybe I can sneak out of the office early. After all, my boss is out of town.

I plan to start my weight lifting program tomorrow morning. I still need to find which days work better for me as far as the gym goes. If I don't make a schedule for myself, it's going to be tough to get into a habit.

Oh well. I'll work it out. Oops. Sorry. No pun intended.

NEWS BULLETIN

This just in...

NEW YORK CITY (October 12) - Taurusmoon, 41, arrived home from work yesterday to a package from Drugstore.com, an online merchant specializing in health and beauty aids. Upon opening the parcel and wading through several feet of packing materials, she managed to unearth the item she had been awaiting for several days: the Fat Track Digital Skinfold Caliper.

With a full evening ahead of her, she found herself unable to perform tests until late at night while she was watching her beloved Yankees fall apart on television (see Sports pages). Early data has proven inconclusive with reports varying greatly between successive readings.

"I can't tell how much of this is loose skin and how much of it is fat," bemoaned taurusmoon. "Should I be grabbing all of this or just 1/8" like the instructions say? Who ordered this thing anyway?"

Briansdad, taurusmoon's significant other, declined to comment.

Yay Cyndi!

I'm not there yet. I can be as obsess- er, focused as anyone else when I put my mind to it, but it takes time. I'm just starting to get into the habit of paying attention to my steps (and trying not to let her cold get in the way too much).

Hmmm, I've always been told to grab all of it, but I've not used a digital callipers. I can't see how not grabbing all of it could be accurate.

Check these pages out:

http://www.accufitness.com/products/fattrack-inst.html

http://www10.netrition.com/fat_track...ions_page.html

http://www10.netrition.com/calipers.html

The last one isn't FatTrack but it shows actual mm measurements expected for people and some are well over 1/8" (about 3 mm)

Stop it you guys! All this talk of fat, and folds, and millimeters is making me more than a little queasy.

Thanks Janice.

All of that came in the package too.

I'm going to have to play with it a bit when I have some more time to fiddle around. So far, I haven't come up with the same reading twice. It's my upper arm that's causing me the most trouble. I've got the middle aged bat wing thing going.

I'll get it sooner or later. If it doesn't get me first. I just wish I had one reading that I knew to be accurate to compare it to. Maybe I'll even give in and have it done at the gym. Ack! What am I saying?

I'll keep trying at home.

On the subject of things we've done and numbers we won't like, I bought a scale last night. Capacity 350 lbs, number seems pretty consistent. I now have a baseline for weigh ins.

Whoo Hoo! Janice becomes a member of the Loosah's Brigade!

 and welcome!

For those of us who haven't already committed to buying a frickin' stupid obnoxious bleepin' scale, could you provide a brand name and model #?

Also, after it has gotten a test drive for a few days, would you post your impressions in the scale thread I am going to start?

Thankyew fer yer support

It's a Health-o-Meter Professional Dial Scale - I found it at BJs for $35.

It's a large sucker but it's pretty easy to read. Would have preferred digital but none of the ones I tried had the capacity for my weight and were consistent enough.

Ooooohhh! I looked at that one (at BJ's ) before I bought the Tanita--mostly because I heard they are very accurate.

But I ultimately went with the Tanita mostly because I thought if I was going to properly obsess, I needed to do it in digital.

I have that one too. It's stashed away in my closet. Unfortunately it wasn't very accurate for me. It had a tendency to understate. Imagine my chagrin when I learned I was 7 pounds heavier than I thought. Sigh.

I had a earlier model of the same scale too. I actually broke a spring on it. Let me tell you, there is nothing more depressing than stepping on a scale, hearing a "BOING" and watching the dial spin around. I felt like I was in a cartoon.

I love the Tanita though, regardless of the overstatement of bodyfat. It always comes to within a half pound of the doctor's scale. And, even though I don't like the numbers I believe them.

Now if only I could get this bodyfat percentage thing figured out...

Well, I can't swear for the accuracy, of course, but it's been very consistent which is a big plus. It had me 5 lbs over the doctor's scale I tried at the mall earlier in the week though, so I certainly hope it isn't understating.

I tried the Tanita and it fluctuated wildly for me (it only promised 300lb capacity).

I think a lot depends on the individual scale. Like I said, I had two of the same scale. The first turned out to be more accurate for me than the replacement. Yet, my son, who was a bit lighter than I at the time, had fewer problems with it.

I will say though, that the readings I got were fairly consistent with each other. That is until I learned exactly which way to lean to get the results I wanted.

I'm actually pretty down today, but I will try and get fired up! Today is my husband's 40th birthday and I'm not getting him anything, but we might go out to dinner.

Okay, guys, I have to get fired up for this weekend. I'm hitting a bit of a slump here....overwhelmed with the details of life, yada yada.

I don't feel like dealing with it with exercise. I feel like eating and drinking and watching TV.

That's okay for a day or two, but it's not okay to get me totally off track.

So, go me, this weekend.

Right?

Signed,
Hopeful

You will go this weekend. You will take the time to have a nice leisurely walk outside before it gets dark. You will do your stretching tape. You will play with all those nice new toys you ordered (if you have them yet).

So it was spoken, so it will be.

Thanks Cyndi! We did go out to dinner, and then I asked if he minded if I walked home. One way was 2 miles, the other way almost 3, so I chose the latter route and got a good walk in. Came home to a screaming toddler.

I also got a new pedometer today. I was going to order the Omron and I still plan to, but I decided I wanted a new one today! So I got another Sportline, but the 343 this time--the cute one that talks and plays little tunes. I've been wearing both today--my broken Sportline 350 and the talking one. My husband saw me consulting it at dinner to see if it registered the 80 steps I took to the bathroom and back. Unfortunately it got only half even though I was striding purposely, so I repositioned it and got it counting more accurately. But Mr. Smart Alec just had to make a comment that I don't burn any calories if the pedometer doesn't register the steps. I told him that the opposite is true too--if it overcounts my steps, I burn even more calories. He told me I should put it on a cross country flight.

I am not fired up. Starting back on the job search for a FT (I have contracts and PT by the dozen, but I'm needing full for now) and hitting brick walls.

Well, I did a decent walk today until my Rio ran out of juice, leaving me in the middle of a Dennis Miller rant without being told that it was just his opinion, he could be wrong.

Forgot to charge it until just now, so I can't do an evening routine with it. Just 10,000 or so steps from the walk, so that's okay. The ground is soggy, but still I like adding two or three miles in the evening because it's cooler and nicer out. THis weekend and next week look better in the forecast, but then I like the hot noontime walks to sweat out the ickies.

Didn't end up going to Amy's Ice Cream, so that's a bunch of calories not eaten. I'll probably do it tomorrow, though, and then have a buffalo burger at bubba's shack Sunday.
