| | Chiropractor treatment and strokes | | A deadly twist on SELF.com Quote: |
Wade S. Smith, M.D., director of the Neurovascular Service at the University of California at San Francisco, was the lead author of a 2003 study in the journal Neurology that confirmed the connection between cervical manipulation and stroke. In the study, Dr. Smith says, patients with strokes caused by torn arteries were nearly five times more likely to have had a recent neck adjustment than those with strokes caused by something else, indicating that "recently seeing a chiropractor is an independent risk factor for stroke."
| OK, so the article isn't the most absolute on science and statistics, and the connection does not absolutely mean there's causation, but those of you going to the chiropractor at least consider not getting manipulations above the shoulders and keep an eye out for some of the early symptoms of a problem (vertigo, dizziness, etc.).

| | Re Chiropractor treatment and strokes | | I read the article last week, and yes I thought about it when I walked into the chiro office tonight, but the neck manipulation really does help my migraines..... |

| | Re Chiropractor treatment and strokes | | Of course you know that a history of migraines makes us more at risk for stroke already...

Just if you're going to do it, watch for signs, OK? Strokes have great recovery odds if they're caught immediately. Maybe it's nothing to worry about, but it doesn't hurt to watch for the signs.

| | Re Chiropractor treatment and strokes | | No... the beta blockers keep you from getting them. Prophylactic meds. I was scheduled to start them when we started trying to get pg with Beanie, and, well, we see how that turned out.
My dad had at LEAST one migraine a week my ENTIRE life (ask me... I can do a GREAT impression of him puking his guts out since my parents' bathroom shared a wall with my bedroom. Now? He can't even remember his last migraine. I wish I was so lucky! | | |
