| | Margo--this is the weight/strength system that my son has. There is a 3rd component but I don't know how to use that part. These are the parts I basically use.

| | That should be great for starting out. Do you have any dumbells or barbells? You can do pretty much anything with those plus some nice extra things with that system.
(Man, I can almost see those biceps poppin' already!)

| | No barbells. Just that and a recumbent bicycle, that will have to do for now.

| | Okay. How many days a week do you think you'd like to do weights. I do them 4 days a week 2 upper body and 2 lower body. They are very simple but effective.
You can do full body 2x a week if you wish but you'll be longer.
Believe it or not you'll want to spend most of your time concentrating on the weights and then fill in on the bike. You will burn more calories for longer during the day than you will after the steady state cardio.
Is this making sense? Do you do your workout in the AM or PM?

| | Speaking of bench press, a friend of mine insists that his wife should be able to bench her own weight, at the very least. Is this true?

| | Right now I want to work out as many days per week as possible. We will have to restructure my time when school starts. Now I am exercising in the mornings, but when school starts it will be late afternoon/evening.
About how much time should I be spending this week? How many repetitions? I guess I want to maximize my time this summer.
Yes Amy, give me a few weeks then I will bench press him!!!!

Yes Amy, give me a few weeks then I will bench press him!!!! | If you don't mind I'm going to ask for direction on setting up a program for you with your equipment. I only use free weights (no machines) so I'll need guidance on that. I'll do that at BLC in your log if you don't mind.
The most you'll want to lift is 4 days a week doing upper body/lower body splits. Fill in the other days on your bike. You can even bike on your weight days after you do weights if you want to spend more time.
But you don't want to do too much cardio. It will actually burn off muscle. The key is to do just enough but not too much. If you aren't going too hard you should be okay.
I asked whether you do AM or PM because you want to eat before doing weights. It makes you able to lift more. You want to lift as heavy as you can with good form. Don't worry about looking like Arnold, it just won't happen.
This is so fun!

| | No I don't mind at all. I appreciate all your help. See I didn't even know about eating first!!
I did 30 minutes on the bike yesterday at level 1. Today I only did 20 minutes, still at level 1. I haven't done weights today.

Oh, my God! That's EXACTLY the same system my husband and son have. I use it occasionally too. It's a great system with a lot of options. |

| | Teddy's actually has a 3rd chair to it also for pull ups, but I can't do them at all. It is a great system, but sadly there was an instruction book that accompanied it. It is lost in the doldrums of the basement somewhere.

| | This is interesting. I just started back to the gym - this is the first time in my life that I've bought a gym membership and actually used it. I'm doing 20-30 minutes a day on the crosstrainer and then another 30 minutes on machines and free weights. I really haven't modified my diet, but my clothes are looking better. My goal is to increase my metabolism so that I burn more calories, including carbs. I just can't stick to a low carb diet, but I'll trade carbs for exercise.

Okay.....I checked to make sure but there are only 2 seats on ours. The 3rd side has things you hang on to (kind of hang there) while you work your upper body. This one is JUST like mine. |

| | Then Sandy it is the same. The 3 rd seat on ours is movable. You can hang and pull yourself up (which I cannot do)--I don't know what the seat is for tho, it does go up and down.
I am still working at this Deb. It has been only a week really that I have been into it. I have been trying the low carb, but I don't know if it is going to work with me. I really need to focus on the exercise.

I miss my old gym. But then again, I haven't given the building gym a try yet and I've only lived here 2 years and 5 months. And it's directly across the hall.

| | Yep, weights first then cardio.
I'm thinking the low carb is just a temporary thing for you right now, Angie? You are working to get off the Metiformin and control your blood sugar with exercise and diet right?

Might depend on her weight. I know of women who do bench press their weight but they aren't 300 pounds either!
