| | Who knew Tofu had a dark side? | | This was in another forum I play in: Quote:
You can read all about in in a book entitled The Whole Soy Story. It's overuse in Western processed foods is linked to endocrine disruption. Also, the likelihood that it comes from GM soybeans is an issue in health circles. You can also read all kinds of horror stories at the Weston A. Price Foundation website. I don't eat tofu much, but like soymilk and make it homemade from organic soybeans. You can't imagine how good that is when it's still hot with a bit of honey and vanilla! Yummers!
Take this with a grain of salt.... it's a bit slanted, but has valid points: Soy Alert! | Interesting stuff, grain of salt or not. |

I can't make heads or tails of the soy controversy, but one thing I do know is that you don't have to worry too much about GM (genetically modified) soy in products like soy milk. Every brand of soy milk that I've seen uses organic non-GM soybeans, and says so somewhere conspicuous on their packaging.
Where the GM/non-organic soybeans are likely to show up is in foods that are NOT being sold specifically as soy foods. For example, soybean oil is in almost every product that contains oil. Soy protein is also in a huge range of packaged foods. When used like that, it is probably made from the cheaper GM soybeans. But soybean oil is actually not a bad oil, as far as oils go, unless it's hydrogenated. |
