| | Did I Break It? | | Uh. Trying to figure out if I broke my arm.
Yes, I said "broke my arm".
A few years ago, Jer had a high hairline fracture - he could pick things up, move his arm around except to get it above his head or totally straighten it out in front of him. (If you remember the story of The Worst Mom in History, I didn't think it was broken and delayed in taking him to the doc. To give credit where credit is due, neither did his father, but somehow, he has escaped getting any kind of award.)
So yesterday my left arm starting hurting like an SOB. And it's fine if it's just at my side, heck I can gesture away and talk with my hands like normal. But try to raise it up above my head or put it straight out in front of me, uh-uh. Doing my hair and makeup this a.m. was an interesting challenge, I would hold my elbow up with my other hand for support.
I can't figure out what I did except fall down at volleyball (and have Butch fall on top of me ) and it didn't start hurting THEN. I swear it's probably just muscular...but I keep going back to when Jer broke his.
I suppose I should go have it x-rayed, but who's got the time? Maybe I should just rest it this wknd and go in if it's still hurting on Monday.

| | Or maybe you should call the doctor and ask what he/she thinks you should do.

| | If it's any consolation, Lynn, I had similar symptoms the time I landed full out as the result of a particularly foolish decision that we're not going to discuss here on the board, and it went away on its own.
I would, however, tend to go with MJ's advise and politely scoot you toward the doctor.

Just a thought.

| | Pish posh. I went to a meeting and Dr. Rob (okay, he's a lawyer but he plays a Dr. on TV?) said it's probably muscular. I'm all for waiting, we have an outing this afternoon (and I will NOT be playing volleyball )
If it's really bad, I can always walk into the clinic tomorrow a.m., right?

| | Call the doc, ma. I do hope it feels better soon though, no matter what it is.
When did you play volleyball? A lot of times muscular stuff takes about 2 days to start hurting, so it could very well be from your fall even though it didn't hurt at the time.

| | Is the pain right at the elbow?
That's where Rob broke his arm. I could tell it was broken by looking at it, though. His arm was purple and swollen. He was hoping for a sprain, but a sprain that bad would have sidelined him for months.
He insisted on going to the ER that night. I'd have let him wait until morning and see the doc - which he had to do anyway, because he needed a referral to see the orthopedist (which didn't happen until the following week).
ER put a soft cast on it. First thing the orthopedist did was re-xray. Second thing he did was take the cast off and tell him to exercise it.
The THIRD thing was to recommend physical therapy, which Rob declined. The PT was because the most common outcome of this type of fracture is permanently limited range of motion at the elbow.
Rob asked if he could wait a few weeks to start the PT to see if he could get things moving himself. Doc said yes and he did fine without physical therapy.
It took me about 3 days to convince him that he also needed to follow the doc's advice and take the high dose ibuprofen to reduce the inflammation that was keeping him from moving his arm.
Now that I've shared my shaggy dog story, I'm going to make a slightly different recommendation. Make an appointment to see the doctor (preferably orthopedist if you can get one in a timely manner and without a referral). If your arm gets better, you can cancel, but no physician worthy of the name will try to diagnose an orthopedic injury over the phone - and some of them don't necessarily know the correct treatment in person.

| | I was thinking the doc could help rule out, instead of diagnose (and I figgered once we talked Lynn into calling the doc, he/she would probably convince Lynn to come in )

| | I figured. The doc would almost certainly just tell her to come in. No way to diagnose via telephone unless she's got an xray machine that digitizes the pics at her house.

Judy is a nurse - listen to Judy! | And my family says, "Don't ask Judy. She'll just tell you to see the doctor."
Which isn't ALWAYS true, but very often is. By the time they're asking me, they know already.

| | Oh, and the orthopedist said Rob's fracture is a fairly common one -- and nearly always results from a fall.

| | Oops, it's too late. Office is closed. I'll sleep on it tonite and see how it feels in the a.m., like I said, I can always walk in.
Not at the elbow, Judy, it's about high midpoint on the upper arm. Hurts on the outside only, and there's no visible bruising.
Dan is just rolling his eyes at me. Especially when I mentioned when Jer had the hairline fracture.
Bree, I played on Weds night. Didn't start hurting until Thursday afternoon. So that's one reason I'm thinking muscular, not fracture.
Plus I don't want to miss our last game next week!!!
