| | Everry year, I go to open house and parent and teacher conferences, and I want to cry. I get to hear how unmotivated the kids are, how they're not meeting their potential, etc. This year I did cry.
My son has done some growing up. His teachers told me how well he is doing. The parents I saw told me what a neat kid he is. Then, came the part that made me cry.
Making my son write used to be like pulling teeth. When asked to write, he wrote technically correct, extremely short boring sentences. Some time recently, the boy learned to WRITE. He wrote a poem about 9/11 that made me cry. The teacher is going to get me a copy, and then I will share it with you all.
It was so nice to hear good things for a change. I came home and told him how good it felt. The boy is still glowing.

| | P.S. That gives me faith for Adam. One of the reasons I like the boy so much is that he reminds me of Adam.... and yes, getting Adam to write is like pulling teeth. He writes short, technically correct sentences with no heart. I know he can do it, he's just not inclined.
Perhaps my the boy could hang out with my Adam?

Let's hope he keeps it up!

| | Amy, that's wonderful! Congrats to both of you - him for using his talent to touch others, and you for setting such a good example.

| | Hey, if he's read your writing, you've definitely set a good example.

| | I finally got a copy of the boy's poem. It was published in the school newspaper. Pain of America
by Kareem Kharboutly
Sorrow struck the hearts of millions.
Fear struck the hearts of America.
Rage came to a few,
But to me came all three.
Sorrow for the familes that had loved ones die,
Fear of what might next happen,
Rage towards the people that would commit such a crime,
And when these three feelings are mixed together and trapped
in your heart...
You feel the pain of America.
Together we suffered.
So many people perished when the towers fell.
Two planes.
Two buildings.
So many hearts.
Now more than ever we need to keep together.
When the hearts of America unite, we are
indestructable...stronger...and most of all hopeful.

| | Amy,
Absolutely lovely.
I would have been proud to have written that myself.
Tell him that some crazy guy from NYC who you know read it and thought it was terrific.
And congrats to the proud Mom, too.

| | Amy, that kid can write! Tell him to keep at it. I've read poems by published adults that lacked the simplicity and eloquance that his poem had - major compliments.
