The sickie house

When Nicholas went to the doctor for his one year well child visit, the doctor recommended a flu shot because he had suffered with some wheezing problems and bronchiolitis last winter. I wish I was smart enough to get ALL of the kids their flu shots. So far, Zachary had the flu last week and then I caught it over the weekend and now my two year old seems to be getting it.

Are flu shots "live" vaccinations? It seems so odd that everyone is taking turns with the flu since the little guy got his shot two weeks ago. Especially since I havent had the flu in years.

Tina,
Flu shots aren't "live" virus -- they're definitely dead. Else they couldn't recommend them for immunocompromised people. So why are you getting this in stages? YOU caught it from Zachary -- probably because you had to take care of him. You doubtless kept the 2 year old away from him while he was sick, but you couldn't avoid taking care of him while YOU were coming down with this (the most contagious time for most illnesses).

Next question - is this really the "flu" or just a bad cold? The fact that you're typing here as well as the timing makes me suspect that it's "just" a cold. Also there's the fact that it's not really flu season yet. Could be, but probably not. I'd recommend that you talk to your doctor about possibly going ahead and getting flu shots all around anyway.

Thanks, worm!

Judy - I knew you would know! I always thought the flu shots were dead, but I wanted to make sure. I am feeling better today, but have been on the couch since Saturday night. My parents had to come get the kids yesterday because I couldnt get up for anything.

Yeah, probably Zachary caught something at school and is passing it on to the rest of us. It just seemed funny to me that it all happened so close to the flu shot. But thanks!

I have homemade chicken soup simmering in the crock pot right now. Hopefully, it will help us.

Couldn't get off the couch sounds more like the flu! It's not a bad idea to check with the doctor, though -- it would be a shame to get sick again if you don't have to.

I'll probably be checking with the doctor fairly soon if the two year old catches it. I'll wait a few days with the oldest, but the two little guys go to the doctor pretty quickly still. (Especially the baby - he goes into wheezing attacks at the slightest sniffle.)

Thanks for the suggestions. I planned on going to the doctor yesterday, but couldnt get up long enough to even do that. I am just glad that I feel 1000 times better today. I havent been that sick in years.
