The 12 days of Christmas aren't over yet, are they? Well, OK, so maybe they are.
But can you stand a cute kid story anyway?
This year had to be the best Christmas we've had so far with our little guy. He's 4, will be 5 at the end of February. I've yet to see Christmas be so magical for him and probably won't see it happen again.
Our little guy isn't yet into the whole gimmie stage. In fact, when people asked him what he wanted for Christmas, he'd usually just look at them quizzically and shrug. He finally came up with one thing that he asked for, but we couldnt' figure out what it was (he described it as the thing with a frog and a red stick).
We took him to see Santa. I'm going to try to upload the picture they took because it is just way too cute. After they took the usual beaming smile picture, Santa asked my son what he wanted for Christmas. He put his hand on his chin and went into "deep thinking" mode. Santa imitated him and the photographer snapped the picture. It's quite precious. She ended up giving us a free 8 by 10 because she (the photographer) liked the picture so much.
By Christmas Eve, our son was finally figuring out that Santa was coming to visit him. We had a fire in our fireplace to "warm the chimney" for Santa (after our son made sure that we knew how to put the fire out. His confidence was shaken a little later when his mother couldn't figure out how to put out a fire on the stove, but that's another story). We set out cookies (sugar cookies that our son had made and shaped into the letters spelling "Jesus" since that was what Christmas was all about).
We then started decorating our Christmas tree. One of the ornaments had a photo of him from last year. He wouldn't put that one on the tree. He kept trying to prop it up on the floor facing the fireplace. When I asked him what he was doing, he said, "I'm putting the picture here so that Santa will know which little boy lives here."
Then it was off to bed. About midway through the night he had to go to the bathroom and then ended up in our room on the floor for the rest of the night. So we woke up when we heard him get up and very quietly open the door. I rushed over so that I could see him tiptoeing down the stairs which were still lit up with Christmas lights. It was one of those Hallmark moments as we watched him look under the tree, gasp in surprise, run over to the cookie dish and then check out the stockings. He got especially excited when he saw that Santa had stepped in the ashes left in the fireplace and left two booted footprints in front of the fireplace.
He then caught on that we were watching him and exclaimed, "Mama! Daddy! Santa was here! And he left round presents!!"
It was a very good Christmas.
