Recently, the Poopster has developed a serious interest in Curious George books: he pretty consistently asks for them over almost every other choice for bedtime reading. So when I stopped in at Barnes and Noble the other day, I decided to expand our collection and bought another five of the tales.
He was thrilled. And I got to see how he reacted to each story the very first time he heard it.
I noticed two things. First, and not terribly surprisingly, he understands how these stories work and, if asked, he can readily predict what's going to happen (which does not, of course, make him any the less enraptured at them).
But the second thing I noticed was particularly amusing. He normally sits very quietly listening to the story, not talking unless I ask him a question about it. But there is one point in
every story when he pipes up with an unsolicited comment.
Each time we reach the paragraph that says something like 'George promised to be good. But little monkeys sometimes forget their promises,' he gives a little sigh and says 'yeah.'
My poor little monkey. He
does try and he really is a very good little monkey. But sometimes he forgets. And he knows it, too.
