| | My BRILLIANT daughter, who will no doubt bring world peace to the lands (if she can learn to put her clothes in a hamper and flush the toilet after each use) is "promoting" this year to the sixth grade, which is a big deal in these parts.
Some crazy parents rent limos for their fifth graders.
Of course, I should really find a rickshaw to make a statement, but it's my daughter, and she is embarassed enough about my eve of the HOA meeting animated lit flamingo (which is presently sitting in my weedy garden wearing a hula skirt and lei).
Anyhoo, back to Haley.
First, I get a phone call from the school saying that she won the school's Kiwanis essay contest for "Why We Should Vote" and that she and the other winners and their families from the area elementary schools would be feted with a dinner and awarded their plaques and $50 US Savings Bond.
(She didn't win the grand prize and I only know this because the information came to me in a press release that I must embargo).
Then, I stopped into the school today to pick up the President's Award Winners names to print in the paper and...yes...her name was there.
So, now we'll be attending a breakfast where she will be awarded her certificate and letter signed by Dubya (or Dubya's auto pen).
And now, hubby and I must keep this secret, as each is supposed to be a surprise for each student.
I'm so very proud of her! What a neat kid.

(And how cool is that that you got the pre-news press release! When does she find out?) | She finds out about the President's Award on June 2 and the Kiwanis Essay on June 8.
She's going to be exhausted by June 12...we have a Choral concert on June 1 the Camporee at Hershey Park on June 10 and 11 and her promotion ceremony on June 12...which is immediately followed by the fifth grade party. On June 13, I would think she would want to sleep...except that she and Gretchen both have dress rehearsals for the dance recital on June 13 with the Dance recital itself on June 17.

| | I think I was telling Judy this when we were at the park, but my friends and I have decided to arrange marriages with my daughters and their sons.
You see, Haley would do wonderfully with my friend's son, who is compassionate and respectful at the tender age of 10.
He plays violin, takes part in scouts, is an acolyte at the same church and is presently in a special math program with the county where he will be taking 9th grade level math classes next year (he will be in sixth grade, then). Haley, who presently desires to be a teacher, will not have to worry as Mr. Math Genius will surely have some high-paying job with a great future.
My other friend is my very best friend who has a son that Gretchen gets along with tremendously well and has since she met him at the age of 3. Her family values are akin to mine, her husband and she just as intent on raising a young man who is respectful and equal minded towards women as Gretchen shall be to her husband. He bakes his own bread at the age of 7 and we think he will be a chef...which is good, because Gretchen presently dips everything in ketchup to eat it (noodles, broccoli, green beans, carrots) and has absolutely no interest in cooking. She doesn't mind doing the cleaning. We imagine her as an artist in a studio above the restaurant they will own. She will decorate and be the hostess. He will be the James Beard award-winning chef.
You see...we have it all planned out....
So, we decided, why not pick our own in-laws?
We would do it very sneaky like. When they are juniors or seniors in high school, we will forbid them to date each other. Hence, they will fall in love and run off to elope, sparing us the expense of a wedding. We will give them the wedding money to start a house and get to work immediately on grandchildren.
It's all part of my master plan.... bwahahahahahaha.

I love you master plan! Forbid them to date - that will certainly ensure a secret romance!

| | Yeah. I think I'm beginning to understand arranged marriages now in other cultures.
Because you aren't just marrying a man or a woman. You're marrying his or her family.
I don't think it could actually work well (or consistently so) in our culture, but I understand it.

| | Elyzabeth,
It works quite well in our culture. You just have to be clever about it. I do remember you telling me your plan at the park. I also remember encouraging you in your endeavor. My #2 son is currently engaged to a young woman with whom I arranged a carpool to the local community college. Her mother is a very good friend of mine and all our friends are delighted as they make such a wonderful couple.
I have to wait a while for the oldest to grow up a bit before I can pair him off, because he has ADHD and I don't expect him to be ready for marriage bef | |
