Boy, they really know how to work you, don't they?

Erin's kind of a night owl, and tries every trick in the book to stay up as late as she can. Last night I saw her under her covers with a flashlight, and assumed she was reading some more. I yanked back the covers and caught her. Normally, this would result in dire remonstrances and hefty threats. But ya know, it's kind of hard to bust your kids' chops when you catch them...

...doing their Bible class lesson under the covers.

Too funny. My sister was the worst for reading under the covers. She could take the heating pad to bed with her and read by its light. Ever seen how small a light that is?

Now I can just about guarantee it wasn't Bible study though.

ROFL - I used the light from the electric blanket at times. I was AWFUL about reading after dark! No wonder I'm nearly blind as a bat now.

Same here. I used a penlight.

And the yard light, which was right outside my window....

And the heat lamp that was warming the baby chicks...

And remember those cheap flashlights that were like a rectangle with the corner cut off, and the rolling switch on that corner? Yep...

I agree that busting chops for reading after light's out is difficult to do. And, how important is it when they don't have to be up really early the next day? If they did need the sleep, then most likely they'd be sleeping and not reading. This one was always a hard call for me.

As a general rule, the better it felt when you said it, the more trouble it's going to get you into.

Yeah, but I worry about their eyes. Plus, even though we don't get up as early as those who have to go to school, I do want them up at reasonable times, so I want them to go to sleep at reasonable times.

Re Boy, they really know how to work you, don't they?

My rule is sort of a combination of Melanie's and Sandy's idea. The Horsemen are allowed to stay up reading a long as they're in bed. However, school still starts early in the morning. They have to get up, eat breakfast and do chores, even if they're tired. EAch of the boys tried pushing it a few times, but now all I have to do is to remind them what time they have to get up.

And I do agree with Sandy - if they really are sleepy, they'll fall asleep in their beds holding a book. The ones who can't sleep really do need to read before bed, at least sometimes.

I am ROFL at Erin doing her Bible class, though - talk about outmaneuvering mom!

Re Boy, they really know how to work you, don't they?

LOL.

I've never yelled about reading in bed. I'll tell Beanie to shut her light off if I'm back there and see it on, but I don't do checks. She knows she has to get up for the bus, but I'm not about to punish reading. I can't rationalize it.
