| | Zachary usually aces his spelling tests, so I couldn't understand why he had so much trouble with the word "creek" - especially since he could spell it just fine at home. He kept spelling it wrong at school, and I would work on it with him but he would spell it wrong again the next day.
The teacher pronounces the word as "crick" and that was how Zack spelled it at school (except he used an e so I didn't make the connection - creck.) Aren't dialects fun? I wonder what the boys think when someone says "pop" instead of soda.

| | I found it rather funny, actually. Zack was crushed - if he doesnt get 100 he has heart failure. The kid is a PITA sometimes.

Poor kid. How do you explain that his teacher talks funny? | He knows about accents and phrases - after all, his dad is an Okie (although he has lost most of his drawl.) I had to train Jay not to put an R in the word "wash" because he always had to warsh his clothes.

| | Ugh...I hate when people warsh their clothes. And when they tell me I live in Missoura. And wrastle.

| | Nick says crick, it drives me nuts. He also calls staples "steeples," the center consol in a car is a "counsel," a cresent wrench is a "cresen" wrench and he even spells it that way. There's more, but I can't remember them all right now. Those little things drive me crazy, especially the "steeples."

| | When I first met Jay, we were out somewhere and he exclaimed "Well, Golly!" I completely lost my composure and laughed for at least 15 minutes - the kind of laugh where you have to bend over and hold your belly because it starts to hurt. He never said it again. Good thing because it felt like I was dating Gomer Pyle.

| | We have a running battle here over li-lahc vs. li-lack for lilac.
My argument is that since we have a Lilac FESTIVAL and over 500 varieties in Highland Park, we know what we are talking about. |

| | Tina have you heard "needs" yet?
The lawn needs mowed.
The warsh needs hung.
The floor needs washed.
This used to drive me nuts in central PA. Verbs have "needs" in front of them. And yes, they to say warsh. The hard core centrals. do.

| | No, I haven't heard that one. Of course, most of the people I have met here have come from some of the larger surrounding cities but moved where housing is more reasonable. Warsh drives me nuts. It's like fingernails on a chalkboard to me.

Angie! Today one of Devon's toys broke and he said, "This needs superglued!" I didn't think I heard him right until just a bit later when he handed me his game boy and said "This needs charged."
We explained "to be" to him. Please don't leave it out of the sentence. You're right - that can grate on your nerves.

| | that's why we have spell check. If I ever bothered to use it
I actually told a teacher that I thought spelling tests were overrated-that we use spell check on damned near everything so why fuss about it?
