| | Re File this one under "NEVER NEVER NEVER!!!!!" | | The belt wasn't a big deal Melanie. It was the buckle I respected. My mother usually just grabbed what was handy. Sometimes if we hid under the bed she'd have to get something long like the broom. The reigns were just handy that day, my dad didn't usually spank us but wasn't opposed to a swift kick in the hinder.
My sister--she threatened me with knives. But usually she just made me sniff the ammonia. Man, what I wouldn't have given for a REAL babysitter.
I am a bit taken back by the razor strap. That would be a new one. It looks very effective.
MJ, I don't think that warranted a spanking. Unless, of course, you were a teen.
Cindy, I can see your parents were much more civilized!

My dad never disciplined me that I can remember, that all fell to my mom. And while I do vividly remember sitting in bed one night trying to hold down the covers so that she couldn't spank me (yeah, right), it was never anything vicious. Sometimes mom used a switch, sometimes a belt, sometimes a hand-spanking but she almost never spanked out of anger or meanness, or too quickly. And the one time that she did get too hard by accident, she decided that it was time to stop.

| | Re File this one under "NEVER NEVER NEVER!!!!!" | | I only remember being spanked twice. My mom had been slapped in the face routinely and spanked with a hairbrush. Her mom once broke a brush on my uncle's backside.
Mom wasn't a believer in spankings, but she could terrify us without ever raising her voice. The quieter she got, the more trouble you were in. My dad was a yeller. Not just a couple of words, he'd share his feelings about what you'd done until you were ready to go cut the switch yourself. He did take off his belt exactly once - when my brother declined to do as he'd been told. When my brother saw the belt coming off, he very quickly retreated to his room and amended his behavior for quite some time.

| | Re File this one under "NEVER NEVER NEVER!!!!!" | | Nah, I have great parents. My sister and I are double best friends.
I didn't grow up to spank my own kids. At least not very often and especially not now that they are taller than me.

| | Re File this one under "NEVER NEVER NEVER!!!!!" | | My grandmother told her sons to NEVER think they were too big for spankings. She threatened to sneak into their rooms and tie them to the bed first if that was what it was going to take.
Not that they ever needed it - my mom and both my uncles were absolute model children, and I mean that seriously.

Margo, I just don't see you as a holy terror, somehow. And look at me - I waited to have a wild misspent youth until I turned 22. Three years ago. |

I don't remember dad ever hitting us - maybe a smack on the butt. Mom spanked but only when really exasperated. |

| | Re File this one under "NEVER NEVER NEVER!!!!!" | | Spanking requires effort. I much prefer just yelling from the couch with the laptop blocking the view of any actual harm being done (to property or persons.)
Cindy, I knew we were close but I had no idea we were the same age.

| | Re File this one under "NEVER NEVER NEVER!!!!!" | | Back to magnets, as Judy pointed out, most of the times it's the little ones who fall prey to these things. Here's a 16 month old that got a magnetic chess pawn stuck in his esophagus, poor baby: Why Homeschool: It was a pawn Quote:
We've had a busy week. We are hosting again a homeschool family who is in town to get medical treatment for their 16 month old son. He had surgery at a hospital near their home, but developed complications. They brought him to Lucile Packard Children's Hospital where he has been a patient for the last week.
Unrelated to his other medical issues, his mother became concerned that he kept gagging and spitting up mucus. His mother pushed for days to have a scope done of his esophagus. Finally, the hospital relented and did the test. The technician was shocked to find what looked like a watch battery stuck in his esophagus. Later that day, surgery revealed that it was a magnetic chess piece from a travel game set. The mother called to tell me the results and wanted me to pass along the information to her other children. She said, "Tell the boys it was the pawn."
The baby is recovering and will be going home soon.

| | Re File this one under "NEVER NEVER NEVER!!!!!" | | I won't be buying Magnetix for my nearly five year old grandson, whose little brother likes to taste and bite everything. I will tell my daughter to collect up all the magnets in the set I gave him last year, and put them up somewhere out of reach, since they are strong enough to stick to a metal box and not fall off.
