| | He's likely right
I told him I'm buying DS either a drum set or a guitar for his birthday(coming up in March)
He said: you are crazy-it' stays at your house right?
well duh yeah...
I also told him I'm buying DD a keyboard for her birthday-one of the nice, expensive big ones that come with a stand. These are things the kids want, and things I'd like them to have. Yes they'll drive me nuts-but they both have too many clothes, too many toys-I'd rather spend my $$$ on something they can use and enjoy.

| | Go for it!
But I think I'd go with the guitar over the drum set. For many reasons.

| | guitar. Drums are v. expensive and v. hard to transport if he gets serious at it. Trust me. I have one in my basement. |

| | good point about the drums being hard to transport.
I have almost a month to decide and to get what I find.
of course, it would be easy to transport a guitar to dad's house wouldn't it?

| | I make it a cardinal rule never to buy things that make noise for children. I leave that mistake to their parents.

| | We bought Zack a guitar for Christmas. He loves it. The amp that came with the guitar is not a very good one, but I like that because the volume is low. Of course, Jay had to hook the amp up to the stereo so he can blow our windows out now.

| | Musical instruments of any kind are never a waste of money. Kids can have fun with them, and gain valuable learning--from listening skills, to basic math. My parents gave me the piano I had as a child. We bought a keyboard also for the kids when they were younger. My son played trumpet and a little guitar. My daughter played french horn, and piano. I think being exposed to music was a tremendous outlet for them.
And I agree, there comes a time when they have enough clothes and toys.

| | My nephew has a drum set and my niece plays piano. Every time I visit, I spend considerable time listening to them practice. And, I never get tired of it.
The kind of kid noise that irritates me is fighting and whining. Happy noise is never a problem. And drum sets are probably why earplugs were invented anyway.

| | You are all going to laugh, but I'd go with the drumset, if he's interested. #2 wanted a drum set, and for a bunch of reasons, I didn't buy one. I thought it would be too loud, take up too much room, and be too loud. He made his own set out of all kinds of things- lids, boxes, hanging spoons and all sorts of metal tools- it was amazing. And sounded much worse than a real drum set would have done. He got so much out of it, though - the eye-hand thing was good, learning to listen and tehn adjust what he did- there is a lot to be said for giving active little boys (and #2 was 12 when he built his!) drums to express themselves with.
Good luck in finding what he'll love! |

| | I have some reasons I'm leaning to the drumset.
However, Have I mentioned the Reggie Haggada/passover tape my mother bought? She thinks ds needs Bongo drums so he can sing along.
