Excerpt from last night's conversation with my 14-year-old

Dad, can I go to a party tomorrow night?

Um, maybe. Where?

At Mystic.

You want me to let you go to a party at a casino?

It's not really at the casino. It's in a hotel room there.

Um, no.

But dad, why not????

~~~~~~~~
Yes, I am the meanest dad on the planet.
First, I was curious about Erik posting in Kiddly... we don't see you in here often.
Then I went
FOURTEEN? HOTEL PARTIES? Do these children not have PARENTS? I'm starting to be convinced that every child but my own is being raised by Fagin.
These will be the same kids having public sex in the hotel lobbies for the staff's amusement in a couple years.
There is no such thing as "just a hotel party" with 14-year-olds. Or 18-year-olds for that matter.
In my head, Erik's son is still 6 years old. It's going to take my head a while to used to the concept of him being a teen.
Re Excerpt from last night's conversation with my 14-year-old
Take heart! School will be starting in a few weeks, and he and his friends won't have as much time to get into trouble.
Down here, school started last Monday, and I think that the volume of text-messaging has decreased to "heavy but moving" ever since.....
Although DD told me last night, "I think I'm going to have to quit my job unless I can be off on weekends because I won't have time to have any fun...."
I said to her, "Freedom comes with responsibilities. All of your "fun" costs money and gas. You're going to have to find a happy medium beetween how much fun you can afford to pay for and how much time it will take to pay for it."
Lest you think we're slave drivers, I assure you we're not.....most of her earnings go towards discretionary items.
She wanted to drive to a town sixty miles away last night. I said, "120 miles. 30 mpg. (Honda Civic.) Approximately $11 in gas...."
She says, "I buy my own gas sometimes....." Sometimes just doesn't cut it...
But hang in there, Erik. Hopefully he'll soon have his days filled up with classes and homework and activities.
Erik, you really are the meanest dad on the planet. Fortunately for your son.
And what Amy said - how in the heck did he become 14? Wow, they grow up so fast.
Fraz, be very afraid. Girls can find LOTS of fun without needing to spend money on it.
Say, "Sure you can go and I'll come along as a chaperone".
Sounds like a good kid. Hey, he asked permission. Some would just sneak out.
In my youth, all parties were hotel parties. Where else could you have a cotillion besides a hotel ballroom?
Kisses,
I'm guessing this isn't a cotillion.
