That's a big baby, but it's obvious to me that they put the smallest baby in the nursery next to her for the picture. The baby beside her is probably between 5 and 6 lbs -- smaller than average by at least a pound. I can tell because of the lack of fat on the smaller baby.

Mom is almost certainly a diabetic.

I was thinking at the least gestational diabetes. Kid's got 8 sisters and three brothers, IIRC!

Oh my. I hope the baby will be ok. She weighs more than #4 did at a year!

Might be gestational diabetes, but 17lbs is much larger than I'd expect for a gestational diabetic. OTOH, in the US, she'd have been put on insulin and given WIC to provide a healthier diet and the baby probably wouldn't have weighed more than 12 or 13 lbs.

I've never seen a baby over about 12 pounds that didn't have blood sugar issues. That baby looks like he's in the newborn nursery, although they may have posed the picture. OTOH, maybe they don't check blood sugars and if the kid doesn't have seizures, who would know until he has trouble in school later.
