Our next door neighbor,Andy, is a wonderful lady. She is an elementary school teacher - the kind I wish I had and would want my kids (if I had any) to study with. Several years ago she wanted to find a way to get the kids excited about learning "life skills". She chose to teach by following the Iditarod race. Her kids loved it, and the school system supported her when she wanted to go to Alaska during the race to photograph, learn and create a curriculum for her class.
After that, she started spending summers in Alaska working at one of the kennels and learning all about the dogs, their training, upkeep, etc. Her dog, Annui (ah-noo-ee) is a gorgeous and sweet Alaskan sled dog that she was given as payment for her work in the kennels. She is an amazing dog, and goes with Andy (Finney) to the schools to demonstrate a lot of the sled dog activities.
We were talking to Andy who is thinking of retiring soon, but wants to stay active with her Iditarod classes. One of the things we suggested was posting a blog and and on-line class that teachers and homeschoolers can follow. We told her we could help her with the blogger basics. Brian went over there today, and while she still has some cleaning up to do, photos to post, and lots and lots of stories to tell, the early blog is available.
I find it so fascinating, and I know that some of you might want to follow this with your kids. The race will be in March, and Andy does a lot of teaching, then actually follows the race - she hopes to do that all online.
So....if any of you are interested, you can see the beginning of the blog
here. She has a lot of work to do still, including posting the pics of beautiful Annui, but it's a really cool story and learning opportunity.
Anyway, Andy is
