I had one start school today too...

High school, that is.

And a private school to boot. I can't remember if I've mentioned, but we decided to send Jer to a parochial school this year.

He looked so grown up in his uniform - white dress shirt, dress khakis, dress shoes, and a tie. Of course, I had to be a geek and get a picture - I'll post it tonite.

The skinny little twerp was fine in the pants I'd bought him when he was barefoot at the store, but they were pretty short when he put on his dress shoes. I hope he doesn't get teased for floods...will have to trade them in on the next size up. You have any idea how hard it is to find 30x34's???? I finally did get a pair on eBay this a.m.; he'll just have to deal with a 32" inseam on the ones I will have to return!

Wish him (and us) luck. I really hope he likes it - he admitted this morning that he was excited about school starting.

Re I had one start school today too...

Aw, Lynn. The first day of high school is a memorable one!!!
Does he have a uniform tie? Or can he wear any tie? Teddy could wear any tie, and I remember during his freshman year he still couldn't tie a tie. My husband gave him a quick course and then he would leave the loop so that he only had to tighten the knots every day!!!
Good Luck to him. My experience is that the learning will be very structured. Are there girls at his school? Or is it all boys?

They can wear any tie they want. He wanted something really fun, but we had a hard time finding anything.

I'm sort of hoping (against hope) that Mom still has some of Dad's ridiculous ties...she used to make his ties and they were "crazy, man".We'll check when we are there at the end of the month. In the meantime, he has a nice tan one and a blue one.

He and Dan had tie-tying lessons last night...I can't tie a tie for beans, so he just knotted it and slipped it back over his head this a.m. I did get to adjust it so it was below the collar.

Co-ed. The girls have to wear specific skirts and white shirts and ties too (I think). They are threatened about rolling up their skirts LOL in the handbook. I am glad I have a boy - they have a little bit more leeway in the clothing, he can wear khaki, blue or black slacks, and white or blue shirts.
It's just that skinny kid thing...no jeans or jean-type pants - they have to be dress pants with a belt. Really hard to find in 30x34!!!

I know. I went through that with Teddy for a while. Dockers were my best choice, and I would watch for sales. Teddy was fussy, he liked the ones with a pleat in the front. He could wear any color Khaki, just not painter's pants. the tie thing was fun around Christmas time. Teddy had musical ties, and I am sure he played them in class at opportune times. Fortunately the teachers had a sense of humor.
Does he have to wear a sweater in the winter??

I had one start school today too. He was crying and pouting and didn't want to go, even though they let him show up in jeans this week.

Yeah, but how many times has he had to repeat that grade?

Angie, they have the option of wearing sweaters in the winter, but they have to be specific colors and cuts.

I am loving the whole uniform thing.

And last night I got the two of "them" to agree to a specific bed time (9:00) with lights out no later than 30 minutes later. I know what will be really hard, but going to try.

Wrangler Riata. It's the only thing Nick can wear. 29x36/38 are even harder to find.

Hope he made it through the first day alright!

ARGH. I should have thought of Nick.

Anywhere locally I can buy them, or just online?

Re I had one start school today too...

My son loved the uniforms because he didn't have to "decide" what to wear and what goes with what etc. He was in 3rd grade when he started and he thought it would be neat to just wear the outfit to bed and sleep in later.....but that only happened once....ironically Good thing that boy had a mother

Re I had one start school today too...

As a parent I like the uniform in the preteen years especially. No argument over what to wear to school. It was the after school clothing...but we didn't need as much, because of the uniforms. The clothing expense for school was easy too, I bought uniforms in the fall, and they mostly lasted. Teddy needed new pants every year, but Missy was good. She could wear her skirts from year to year. But if you ask Missy I am sure she has a different viewpoint on uniforms!!!

I fully empathize with him!!!! Aside from being in total agreement, comradeship, and in full sympathy. Does he have kids this week?

No, but he's got a union meeting today after school (the union he didn't want to have come in, didn't want to join, and that's now adversely affecting his life).

Locally up there? I’m not sure. We get them from The Fort or a western store down by us called Cavendars. Most western stores should carry them, otherwise I’m not sure. The Riatas are really nice, they’re the ones Nick wears to work every day & come in a couple different colors of khaki. The also have the “old man dress pants,” as we like to call them.

You'll notice I NEVER mentioned my daughter and her views on school uniforms. Even with the uniforms it got really expensive. With the girls you have uniform jumpers, skirts, vests, sweaters, slacks, different colored (yellow or white) blouses, long sleeved blouses, short sleeved blouses, and of course you could get them in navy solid or plaid.

Then for after school and church and etc. you still needed all those girl clothes.

Boys are cheaper.

Re I had one start school today too...

Oh Sandy, my kids didn't have that many choices. Marissa had a jumper and blouse until 6th grade, then it was the skirt, or kilt and blouse and vest. I mostly bought blouses, because I didn't want to wash every day!!!

Paying for private (read parochial aka Catholic) HS for me years ago was the best gift my parents ever gave me.

Not sure I ever thanked my parents for that . . ..

I am sure I would not have turned out as well as I have ( oh be quiet..!! ) without the solid foundation that 'tough' education gave me. Even 'back then' our local public school was a step or two lower. Not sure it is any better today.

No . . .I know our local public ed (same city) is not better today.

...tom...
