Jeremy and Chris are in Japan!

Jeremy and Chris left for Japan from Toronto on Monday, August 17. They took a bullet train from the airport, arrived at their hotel (a Day's Inn for tourists), and Jeremy almost immediately began his orientation, two blocks away. He isto be interviewed by the school board that is hiring him, and then if all goes well he will teach English as an assistant teacher in three different elementary schools. So far, so good. Wow, it was enough of a worry when he was living across town, and then three hours away. Now he's on the other side of the world!

Re Jeremy and Chris are in Japan!

This will be an exciting time for them!

My niece will be going to Japan next year as an exchange student. She'll be there for the whole school year. I'm not sure where in Japan yet, but wouldn't it be funny if they were in the same region?

Re Jeremy and Chris are in Japan!

Helen, my son has taught in South Korea, and has visited Japan and China. It has been a wonderful experience for him, and he has paid his student loans and accumulated a substantial nest egg in short order.

The Japanese and South Korean cultures are somewhat different. English is a mandatory course in South Korea. Street signs are written in both our alphabet and Korean characters (and Korean characters are much simpler than Japanese--there are only 24 characters and each little box represents a syllable.) All business is conducted in English, and there are some companies, such as Samsung, where even the custodial staff must learn English to be hired.

The cost of living is also considerably lower in Korea, which attracted my son because he wanted to build a nest egg.

He has a good friend from the US who lives in Tokyo (a computer whiz.)

He visited Hiroshima, Osaka, and Tokyo while in Japan, and Osaka was his favorite city. Where is Jeremy going to be teaching?

Are you thinking of going to visit him?

I have my passport, and if he stays beyond February (he hasn't decided yet....it depends on the current love of his life) I am determined to visit him--17 hour plane flight or not...
