Schools and Early Out Days

Ok, so, I know there are teachers on the board and oodles of ya'll have kiddos in school.

What's normal for inservice (or early out days) for kids?

Mine started 8/14, they had an early out day the other day and then holiday today and another early out day 9/10.

Man, that just seems like a lot to me already this school year.

I just wanted to get a feel from others out there to see if I am just crazy or if this is normal operation nowadays.

Re Schools and Early Out Days

We are allotted one half day per month for early out/faculty meeting inservice. We can combine and take a full day every 2 months.
That is in addition to mandatory district type meetings. Or holidays.

Re Schools and Early Out Days

We stopped doing half days a couple of years ago. Last year I believe the state required 6 full professional development days. This year the kids only get 4 of the 6 days off because we have to do the other two days as an extention of our regular school day.

Yours sounds excessive but I'm not liking all those extra hours (on top of all the extra after school day hours I always have) added on to my days. I'm pooped when the kids leave.

Re Schools and Early Out Days

Hubby's school has them come in two full weeks before the kids start school and they're in all-day trainings for most of those 10 days, but then they don't have more than one or two during the school year IIRC.

Re Schools and Early Out Days

I couldn't tell you how often we have them or even when their first one is--I guess my kids are old enough now that it doesn't seem to have much of an impact on me or them.

Re Schools and Early Out Days

Part of the reason we got out of the public school system. Maybe it's Iowa, Kim.

Lynn, that could be. I am just baffled. I am glad that we kept her "daycare -preschool" because I wouldn't have enough time off of work to make all of these early outs, holidays, inservice, etc.

Re Schools and Early Out Days

Oh, I hear you Kim.

Between when Bree moved out and Jer was old enough to stay at home, I used up most of my vacation between August and December in nothing but "school out" days. It got real old, real quick. Not that I minded spending time with him, but you know what I mean!

I do think Iowa does way more than neighboring states. I don't hear about anyone else who has as many teacher 'inservice' days as we had.

Re Schools and Early Out Days

It sounds like it might be monthly inservice/faculty meetings. Do they tell you what the day-out is for? Teacher inservice?

Re Schools and Early Out Days

I am not sure. The calendar just shows 9/10 and 10/1 early outs and then 10/3 all day. They don't specify a reason here. And, some reason, tonight their website is just wonky. Sometimes the pages will load, others it crashes. It's annoying me and I cannot keep looking around having every page load fail only to load with 1 or 2 refreshes!
