| | Addicted to Another Computer Game. Ack! | | Okay. Here goes nothing.
I'm an addict. Yet again. I've been addicted to The Sims (and the subsequent add-ons), Diablo II, Rollercoaster Tycoon (and subsequent add-ons), Black & White (until my computer decided NOT to run it any more), and SimCity 3000. Among other online games.
Now of all times, I am addicted to yet another game. This time I find that Civilization 3 has roped me in. I can't stop playing. Any other victims out there of the same affliction?
At least I've got a decent computer now. I was addicted to The Sims and SimCity 3000 when I had a P2 300 with just 48MB ram and 4MB Video. Now I've got an AMD Athlon 1.4GHz with 512MB Ram a 64MB video card, etc...

| | Yup, Kalynda got me Civ 3 for Christmas, and I haven't stopped. There's always a live game. I'm at Monarch level now and regularly scoring 1500 or so.
Hint: Playing on a huge map takes forever in terms of processing time, but can help your score a lot.
There's also an incredibly geeky site that has all sorts of strategy (half of which I can't follow) and is regularly visited by Firaxis staff. I'll post the link when I get home. |

| | Civ was the first non-card computer game I remember being really truly addicted to. I still play it from time to time. Civ II was a nice improvement that is still on my regular play list (and that I liked enough to buy both for my Mac and for Win, something I rarely do). I have so far managed to convince myself I don't need Civ III, although I've come close to buying it numerous times, once as recently as Monday night.

| | Loved Civ, Loved Civ II (and have spent whole weekends with it) but haven't really gotten Civ III yet. My civilizations seem to peter out around the 1800s, no matter what I do. I think I haven't quite figured out some of the new economic strategies.

I have a question for you Civ3'ers: Do you have a technique to sit down and just play a few turns? How can you get back into the flow with all of the different things going on? I'm asking this as a new father who spent many, many long (and contiguous) hours in front of CTP and CTP2, but is having trouble keeping his mind around Civ3 now that his IQ is about 100 points lower. |

| | Todd posted the link. Those folks are some serious gamers. The economic and cultural strategies alone make you nuts.
And to answer your question, Todd, I can't do less than an hour of the game or my concentration is wrecked. |

| | I'm sorry folks, my addiction to Civ III lasted much shorter then expected. The easy tour of duty was fun, from start to end. However, then I went for a "short and nasty": some time around 1000a.d., a group of three warriors passed by my territory. They were the Rambo I, II and III incarnate and systematically destroyed my defences while themselves invulnerable to my musketeers (!?). I reloaded and finished the game with a cultural victory, promptly avoiding any further battles.
I tried once more: a huge game with all CPU opponents on (BTW, is there a possibility to display all the leaders?). On 1.3GHz Athlon it took between 5 to 15 min per turn! Finally, I gave up still in dark ages and abandoned high difficulty settings all together.
The trouble is: up to a certain point is too easy and past this, the CPU cannot be beat in battle. Once, just to prove it, I sent an army consisting of two elite motorized infantry and one modern armour against 8 level town. It was defended only by two rifleman and a catapult, I might add: very successfully...
Now, then I need my “one more turn” fix, I’m back to Alpha Centauri. | | |
