| | So, weekend warriors, what's on tap for this weekend? | | Atlantis or Tomb Raider?
Cheesy Disney animation or cheesy actioner?
I am thinking Atlantis; I usually steer clear from Disney animation, but this looks like it's more adult and has less singing. And it's good that my main man Alex Keaton is getting work.
Tomb Raider scares me no end; the thought of Angelina Jolie with a British accent is frightening. The action should be OK, I guess, but the whole thing just screams dumb, dumb, dumb.
Thoughts? I will probably see both, depends.

| | This weekend promises to be hot and nasty, at least around here.
So, in honour of the new video store whcih opened near us and which actually has a foreign movies section , I am going to make a raid on Friday morning, and spend Sunday watching good stuff.
I can't wait. Did I mention how much I love Kurosawa?

| | Provided I can get a babysitter, this weekend I'm going to see a stage version of 2001 put on at a local warehouse and then The Cmplt Wrks of Wllm Shkspr, Abrdgd at a downtown park.
I want to see Atlantis though. Think it'll be OK to take a three-year-old to it? Or is it supposed to be too frightening for that age? edited to fix ubb coding

| | Neither one has me particularly excited...though, contrary to Curtis, Angelina Jolie with a British accent does turn me on. Before I'd see either of them, though, I'd rather check out Moulin Rouge or Memento. Nonetheless, it ain't gonna happen this weekend, since I'm leaving on a jet plane for a week's stay at Orlando. |

| | Must admit Tomb Raider has me a little curious ... no idea why.
It'll have to wait, though ... I'm pet-sitting for friends so will be basically housebound the whole weekend. Which is fine, especially since they have a nice video collection.

| | Whatever they decide to play in the company jet.. unfortunatly the flight is usually too quick to get to see the entire movie... last run to el paso and we only got to see half of Star Wars Eps 1. |

| | | Heh I am going to check out Tomb Raider personally... Atlantis... Well... I will wait on that one.
The best one that I have seen recently has been Momento though and I have also seen Shrek, Evolution, Swordfish, and Pearl Harbor (and I would rate those in that order). Still working on getting reconnected to the internet at home and thinking about how to write reviews on all of those right now though...

That means I either see Shrek for the third time in the theater, or see what's on PPV this weekend. We usually do one or two PPV movies per weekend...Blockbuster if PPV yields nothing but dreck.
I miss the lusty days of first run fever, but I enjoy the convenience (visual sacrifice understood) of my own little home box office.
My son Dan has decided that we are seeing Shrek 12 times before it leaves the theaters, so.....I could be there again. I wouldn't complain much; really enjoyable film.

| | I have to say, I have been looking forward to Tomb Raider for an awful long time now. Aside from Angelina Jolie putting out a couple of superb performances recently (I am strangely not scared of the Brit accent) I have to stand up and say, for the record, us chicks have been overlooked for far too long on the superhero/strong female fantasy type in film.
Don't even bring up Wonder Woman, Supergirl or Thelma & Louise (which rocks by the by). I had high, high hopes for X-Men (Storm being one of my favorite comic characters from way back) but when the part went to Halle Berry, all was lost and it showed in the film as well.
So, I say to all you chicks out there, grrl power, err wait, that's not what I meant to say. If you are scared it is going to suck, stand by, I will take the bullet and go see it first *wink* and report back. Believe me, even though I am hoping it will be a fun ride I am prepared for te worst. And, after reading through an old review of mine were I got to shred the lousy movie to pieces, I am more than ready to take out a little aggression on a summer flick that draws me and and leaves me hangin'. Atlantis looks like it could have some promise as well but I am going to sit back and wait for a few fellow movie advisors to give me the skinny on that one.
And, I have to say, we went with my mother-in-law to Moulin Rouge (second time for me) last weekend and it was just a brilliant as the first time. Anyone who has even an inkling to see that film, take my advise here and make sure you get to see it in the theatre, on the big screen - it is often times breathtaking, none stop fun, ocassional giggles, and the best money I have spent at the theatre in well, in an incredibly long time.
So, that's my after birthday rambling on this most recent thread.
Shannon ...

| | I think Tomb Raider with my step-son. As he says,"She (Angelina Jolie) has some nice **** sucking lips." I guess guys go for that sort of thing.
I may take my son to Atlantis. I'm an avid reader on Atlantis research. So, this will be nice for both of us.
Nice round ofr a weekend. Something for the whole family.

| | I haven't seen it yet, but here's what the fine folks at Screenit.com say in their weekly newsletter:
A meek but determined researcher sets out
with an ancient guidebook and a questionable crew to find the lost land
of Atlantis. Obviously hoping to bank on the fact that the famous
missing island still fascinates people, the folks at Disney have put
their own animated spin on the legend in this surprisingly flat, trite
and less than compelling picture. Despite being helmed by the
co-directors responsible for "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Hunchback
of Notre Dame," this non-musical flick has an incredibly calculated look
and feel to it that, along with the politically correct rainbow
assortment of characters, feels too forced and contrived. At the same
time, however, the filmmakers have opted to make something of an edgier
animated flick - perhaps sensing that their audience demographic is
skewing a bit older - and thus there's a lot more human on human
violence then before, as well as smoking, crude humor and some
sexuality/sensuality. As a result, some parents may be surprised at what
sort of animated film Disney has delivered this time around. That, and
the fact that the animation also looks substandard for what Disney
usually delivers may leave many viewers disappointed by this picture
that, when compared to the computer generated magic, fun and creativity
of "Shrek" and the "Toy Story" films, may likely sink into the depths of
cinematic obscurity, with few really caring, noticing or probably ever
making the effort to find and see it again. The PG rating comes from
action-based violence that includes many people being killed in the
explosions/destruction of various crafts and vehicles (although we don't
see any of the actual deaths) along with unsuccessful attempts on
various characters' lives (where all sorts of weapons are used in
attempts to threaten, harm or kill others), some punching and other such
fighting.
You can read their full assessment HERE. Be aware, however, that Screen It is unapologetically full of spoilers. Still, it's the best resource in the world for concerned parents (and others). |

| | I'll have Christopher alone this weekend (Andrew's going to his Dads - he and Chris (and he and I) need a break from each other) so we'll probably go see Shrek. That's if I can get everything done at the house in time - we move on the 23rd and time is running out! Personally, I'm anxiously awaiting "AI" or "Artificial Intelligence" or whatever the movie's proper name is.
