| | Father’s Day is coming up. What three books do you most think your dad would enjoy getting? Why those three?
My dad loves biographies, but I can't think of any off-hand that he hasn't already read. Maybe Gail Sheehy's book on Hillary Clinton. So I don't have an answer to my own question yet, but I'm working on it.

| | Well, I never buy my dad anything for FD, but if I had to buy him books, they would be anything relating to science, namely physics. I wouldn't have any idea exactly what to buy though. |

| | Well, I sent my father the new triple biography of Teddy, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt which tries to tie their progressive politics together and looks at them as principled 'class traitors' as they stood up for the working class against the elite.
Sounds like his kind of thing...

| | When my Dad was visiting my library, he preferred mysteries. He especially likes reading the tales of Jessica Fletcher ("Murder She Wrote.")
I gave him a Pennsylvania Dutch mystery (complete with recipes.)
And of course he's fond of Nero Wolfe.
Having been in the higher echelons of New York City government in his career, he is always interested in reading about NYC politicians--Guiliani, for example.
But he hates Hillary, and I don't think he'd like Sheehy's book. |

| | My dad didn't start reading until after he retired, but he's made up for it since then. He has a complete collection of Louis L'Amour and Tom Clancy, both of which I've read and enjoyed. For Father's Day . . . . hmmm
I've already picked up a copy of The Oregon Desert by E.R. Jackman and will add a copy of Grant's Getaways: Outdoor Adventures with Oregon's Grant McOmie. My parents love to travel around Oregon, pulling a small travel trailer behind them, and my dad loves to read about places yet unseen. The third book will be a book of Oregon State Park gift certificates that can be used to redeem campsites. I think he'll enjoy it just as much as the other books.
Deb
who does love her dad

| | Deb,
Has your Dad ever read William Kittredge's Owning It All? I'm very fond of Kittredge's work, but this is an especially nice memoir about growing up on a ranch in eastern Oregon. |

| I don't think so, but this sounds like something the both he and my father-in-law would really enjoy. I found two copies of Owning It All at Powells Books, along with The Portable Western Reader, a collection of short stories (Ken Kesey, Larry McMurtry, Wallace Stegner) that Kittredge put together. I think I need to give them both another bookcase for Christmas.
Deb
who says "Thank You" for the tip!
