Songs that make you cry

Do you have any songs that make you tear up or cry any time you hear it?

I just heard Mark Shultz's "He's My Son" again. Every time I hear that song I lose it.

"Silent Night" at church on Christmas Eve. Makes me so homesick I just can't stand it.

I can think of two specific ones. The first is U2's "Kite". The reason why it makes me cry is because it reminds me of my mother who passed on around this time last year.

The second one is the previously mentioned "Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong. I've heard that song for many years and always found it emotionally affecting. But it really affected me when I heard it a few days after Sept 11. I was still in a state of shock about what happened and hearing Louis Armstrong sing those words in his voice seemed emotionally uplifting.

I had asked this a while back in another thread but got no bites...

I had checked out from the library a longer while back, actually at least a year or more ago, a CD of classical music that was titled something along 'Sad Music' or 'Sorrowful Music' or something like that.

I was playing it for the first time at work and one piece truly was the most sad and evocative piece of classical work I had ever heard. One of my co-workers even commented on how sad the music sounded. But I can NOT find the CD or recall the title closely enough to find it by searching the library catalogue.

Anybody got any idea of what the piece might have been ? I guess what I am really asking is lets extend this thread to include 'the classics' and see if anyone has some in that genre...

I'm an easy crier.

Sappy love songs ('My Heart Will Go On' -esque) and the like will do it.

Also, some opera bits will do it (Madame Butterfly, etc.)

One piece that surprised me was a Hebrew melody on a CD by Perlman. I found myself tearing up for no apparent reason, and then realised that he was playing a tune that had been backing music for 'Schindler's List'.

I thought I already answered this question, but...

Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven
Eric Clapton - Wonderful Tonight (it was my high school senior prom song, so of course it makes me feel sappy)
Sarah McLachlan - I Will Remember You
Lonestar - I'm Already There
TLC - Dear Lie

and of course,
Louis Armstrong - Wonderful World (especially in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks)

"Tears In Heaven" by Eric Clapton and "Daddy's Hands" by Holly Dunn make me think about my date who died when I was five eleven years ago.

"Angel" by Sarah McAchlan (sp?) brings me back to a dark period in my life.

NOT that I am admitting anything than shedding one manly tear here, you understand.

After taking every detour
Getting lost and losing track
So that even if I wanted
I could not find my way back
After driving out the memory
Of the way things might have been
After I'd forgotten all about it
The song remembers when

Plenty of songs make me bawl...

There Is A Light That Never Goes Out by the Smiths is my all time favourite for crying like a little baby...

Plus, many tracks on The Holy Bible are pretty moving, especially the one's about the holocaust - they're just totally brutal.

There's my 2 pence worth...

Just a question for curiosity's sake. Does knowing that Eric Clapton wasn't the lyricist on Tears In Heaven change your perception of the song? Yes, I know it's beautiful and all, but does the fact that the words were not written by him change their impact on you?

Your old music cannot sustain you through a life, not if you're someone who listens to music every day, at every opportunity. You need input, because pop music is about freshness, about Nelly Furtado and the maddeningly memorable fourth track on a first album by a band you saw on a late-night TV show. And no, that fourth track is not as good as anything on Pet Sounds or Blonde on Blonde or What's Going On, but when was the last time you played Pet Sounds? - Songbook by Nick Hornby

I don't have to think the opera singers are the lyricists or composers of their music for it to be moving to me.

I don't think knowing that makes a difference.

In the Living Years by Mike & the Mechanics is a case in point. The lyricist is not the singer; Mike (who doesn't sing) is the lyricist.

I don't tear up at songs in general. (Ask my wife the ? and you'd be up to page 80 about now.) There are a couple. (I will exclude classical music, that aint a song in my book, it's just music.) The few I can think of are manly redneck country songs with a twist.

1. The one about the vette and the dead military guy. Private *********. by ?

2. Another one about some guy and his bud that went off to paint a picture. No idea on that one.

3. One I heard on the GG Liddy show. By?

4. An old patriotic tune by Charlie Daniels. Forget the name of that one too.

5. That Poison song. "Give me something to believe in" Although it took until I was in my 20's. (They were popular in my teens.)

Like Slick any info would be appreciated about these songs.

I mainly listen to Ozzy, the Dead, and Zepplin type stuff. though.

Wife hates Ozzy, but I got her to cry to "Mama , I'm coming home." every time she hears it. I used to play it to her before I would leave on an op in the military. Sick bastard I am. Only time she doesn't want me to change radio station from the hard rock station to that country station while driving. Plus I can make fun of her teary eyes in the car by sniffling, and getting her all riled up.
