Summer Reading Programs for kids | | Every year, Barnes & Noble stores do a summer reading program for kids. They have papers in the store that you fill out with the names of 8 books that your child has read, and for each paper you fill (limit of 2) your child can pick a free book from a list of books.
Children from grades 1-6 are eligible. You get a choice of 25 books (different age related books--some 1-2 grades, 3-4 and then 5-6.) Actually, the first year that my son did this, they were out of stock of one of the books (it was an "Arthur" book) and the nice cashier just let him pick a different Arthur book even though it wasn't on the list, so that's a maybe - YMMV.
Of course, most public libraries have summer reading programs. Ours has a party at the end of the 8 weeks, usually with a children's entertainer of some sort, followed by presentation of certificates, and ending with a chips-cookies-and-KoolAid "party".
If anyone knows of any other summer reading programs (other bookstores or whatnot) please add them to this thread.
