LOL! That is too funny.
I felt the same way (and got the same reaction from my Black Flag/Ramones-loving friends) when I stumbled into classical about fifteen years ago. Some of my friends asked "How the hell did this happen?" and I was like "I don't know!"
One place you should check out is the website for NPR's Performance Today. The PT Basic Library, their list of recommended CD's for new fans, is a terrific introduction to different composers and works. And if you can find an NPR station in your area that carries the show, host Fred Child does a great job of presenting the music in a way that is friendly and accessable without being patronizing.

| | [butting in to answer Joubert's question even though he didn't ask *me*]
I like Schubert (SP?) - a music teacher taught us to sing "This is the symphony that Schubert never finished wriiiii-ting" to remember how his Unfinished Symphony goes.
And I like Bach's Fugue in G minor.
So where do I go from there in the College of Musical Knowledge?

| | I've spent all but three of the last - uh... - 45 years making music, specifically classical. I started singing in 8th grade and just never stopped until last January when my choral ensemble folded due to lack of money. I met my husband singing and we are looking for a new musical home. I love classic rock and some tradiitonal and World music, but it's classical that I live and breathe.
The best way to get a musical education is to find a good classical FM station and just start listening. Don't worry about what you know or don't know - just listen. And after a while you'll find some things sounding familiar and you'll find that you can begin to identify composers by their music.
My special love is choral - there is NOTHING in the world like the goosebumps and emotional response to the human voice en masse. I'm Jewish, but the peak moments of my life have been when I've been singing, and most of it has been church and liturgical music. I've done it all, from 12th century to contemporary, and it still never ceases to thrill me.
It's thrilling and wonderful and I welcome you to this world!

| Well, Chopin actually is considered not that technically difficult. ( as if I would know...) Most of the artist have more trouble capturing the feeling than the notes. If it's speed what fascinates you, may I suggest Liszt... Not that lacks feeling but he was a guy whom the contemporaries treated like we treat today's punk-rock star. |

| | Wow, I would not diss the dead like that, but I respect what you said. Speed does catch my when it comes to classical composers. But when you listen to Chopins music you cannot help but to get drawn into the tunes. . I hope this is a good thing. |

. . . and if you want to try more contemporary piano playing, see if you can beg, borrow or burglarize some Keith Jarrett from someone . . .

| | Rick Wakeman would not be bad to add to the contemporary stack either.
Okay, I'm done channeling Kalynda.
I'm partial to Vivaldi, but you may find some enjoyment from Saint-Saens based on your comments.
Enjoy -- there's so much classical music available at your record store for under $5 that you can afford to experiment! | | |
