Does she write fiction?
If so, does she write primarily in one genre?
Does she write non-fiction?
Enough for now?

| | Is she Jewish? no (I suppose I should just start answering this one in my initial hint )
Does she write fiction? yes
If so, does she write primarily in one genre? no, not a well-defined genre
Does she write non-fiction? yes
Enough for now? Suppose so. |

Oops- is she still alive? Yes -- my initial hint was meant to imply that. I am devious, but not dishonest.
Is she an American? no
Has she won any major awards for writing? no, I don't think she's won anything that would be considered really major
Is she well known for anything besides writing? I originally answered 'no' but, upon reflection, I suppose the correct answer is 'yes'

Was she born in Europe? She happened to have been born in England, but did not, in fact, live there (or anywhere in Europe) as a child.
Was she born after 1935? no
Has she published more than one novel? yes |

Australian?
Besides writing, is what she is apparently well-known but not famous for an activity related to some other art form?
Has she ever compiled a dictionary?* * Just in case that bit about a poorly defined genre is some of theeye's truthful deviousness. |

Has she ever written a best-seller? Let me check that out. -- Yes, she seems to have.
Are there any movies made based on her books? Yes, I know of at least one. Really horrible adaptation of a wonderful book. *shudder*
Could she be considered a feminist writer? Yes, I'd say so.
Does she currently live in the United States? No.
Is she still writing?Yes, she published something not all that long ago.

Besides writing, is what she is apparently well-known but not famous for an activity related to some other art form? No. And, frankly, I think of her as a writer, period. But she is apparently also well-known for something else.
Has she ever compiled a dictionary?* No. And I was not being devious -- it's just that she does have a fairly distinctive style, if not an actual genre. |

Please note that I never said she doesn't live in Europe now, only that, despite being born there, she did not actually live there during her childhood (after the first few weeks of it). Quote: Originally posted by AuntieEmma One more:

| | Umm, does she live in Europe now?
If so, in Great Britain?
Is the other activity for which she is known (by some) related to athletics? Medicine?* Finances?
Is the movie adapted from a novel?
Was it released in the 1990s? Just trying to be clear, since some people call medicine the healing art. |

| | Ok, does she currently live in Europe?
Did she spend her childhood in North America? South/Central America? Africa? Asia?
Are her works often assigned to high school students? College students?
Would her books be out of place in Oprah's book club?
Are any of her books set in the place where she spent her childhood?
Do any of her books seem autobiographical? |

| None of the above. Quote: |
Is the movie adapted from a novel?
| Yes. (The one I know of. There might be others.)
And, in fact, there are quite a few others (mostly TV versions), according to imdb.com. Who knew? Quote: |
Was it released in the 1990s?
| No. But in looking at the other imdb listings, I see that there was what appears to be a TV miniseries (it says 'mini' next to the name) of the same novel and the commentary there indicates that, unlike the feature film, this one was excellent. Might have to see if I can track it down. Quote: Originally posted by AuntieEmma Ok, does she currently live in Europe? | Yes, see above. Quote: |

| Good question. Probably not. But you never know. Correction: Probably not to high school students, but almost certainly to university students. A university press has published a collection of critical essays on her work. Quote: |
Would her books be out of place in Oprah's book club?
| I think so (that is, I think they would be out of place). But, to be completely frank, I've actually never been all that aware of Oprah's picks, other than to know that they exist. I don't think I could name more than maybe two of them. And I don't think I've read many of them (perhaps not even any).
So, the most honest answer would be: I don't really know. Quote: |
Are any of her books set in the place where she spent her childhood?
| (thinking . . .) I don't think so. Quote: |
Do any of her books seem autobiographical?
| Oy. What a question.
Well. Um. Not in the strict sense.

| | Is the thing that's she's know for besides writing have something to do with politics or support of some cause?
Ok, let's see ... she didn't spend her childhood in Europe, North, South, or Central America, Africa, or Asia ... did she spend her childhood in the Middle East? Russia? Australia?
Are any of her books controversial? |

| Oh, close enough. New Zealand. Quote: |
Are any of her books controversial?
| Yes, actually. Her most recent one rather shocked me. Seriously. Completely floored me.
(Edited to note that I have not, in fact, read her most recent book. I am, nonetheless, quite shocked by it. ) |

Essays?
| Yes, both. A lot of plays. Screenplays, too. One correction: I have found reference to a collection of essays about this author's work, published by a university press. It even includes one essay by an English professor at my own alma mater (and my roommate's thesis advisor!). I am therefore now suspecting that I ought to have answered, yes, she is likely to be assigned reading in university courses.
And I am even suspecting that said roommate might look askance at me if she knew how I had answered that question initially. Please do not tell her. |

| | Have you seen any of her plays performed?
Is it likely that I have heard of this writer?
Are there any themes which consistantly appear in her writing- such as religion, motherhood, feminism...or something like that?

I probably have seen some of her work performed on television, though. She was apparently a writer on . . . well, something I've seen. Quote: |

| Yes, I think it's quite likely. Quote: |

| Yes, there are some themes that are common to her work. In fact, a bio I found on the web, in mentioning one odd fact about her life comments parenthetically, sounds like something out of a ___ ____ novel, doesn't it?. | |
