| | Was her husband also a writer? Yes, as well as an academic
Did she have any other famous close relatives? Not that I can find.
Would you say her name was distinctly Irish? No, although she had a lovely name.
Was there anything particularly notable about her lifestyle or personal habits (other than owning only one pot)? Well, she was brilliant and slightly eccentric. In other words, nothing remarkable
Was she known to have strong political views? No
Do you remember her name being mentioned in this forum at any time? If I recall correctly, Markham mentioned her in a thread, but I don't remember which one. Of course, I could be wrong. |

| | Nah, I was thinking the same thing. But she fails several tests, not the least of which being that her first name starts with a vowel. |

| | Ack!
Her first name does begin with a vowel.
It is Iris Murdoch. As for failing other tests, I went back through and rechecked the answers against the sites I found, and can't find the other mistakes. You'll just have to go ahead and tell me.
And I am sooooo embarrassed about messing up that question - I apologize.

| | Um, she died in 1999 which I believe was more recent than 1990?
And maybe another. I remember checking a couple of times and deciding that, no, it just couldn't be her.
Don't fret, Cindy. The errors are far outweighed by my relief that I actually have heard of her. (Though I must confess to never having read any of her work. So if you did pick up anything at Biblioasis, I might take you up on that offer to lend me one . . .)
You're up, Em. |

| | I haven't read anything by her either, though I read the thing her husband wrote in the NY-er about taking care of her while she had Alzheimer's. Haven't seen the movie made from that, though.
Cindy, don't sweat it. Theeye -- I think you should be declared the winner of this round, because you thought of Murdoch before I did, and also you were paying more attention to the answers than I was! |

| | Here is a way for both of you to be winners.
John Bayley, Murdoch's husband, wrote a wonderful book about Iris, their marriage and her Alzheimer's. The book is warm, positive, and I think it is just brilliant. EPs member eric_james wrote a review of this book which is also fantastic. Go read this review of Elegy For Iris.
Now- you'll just have to flip for whoever goes next. Anyone care to guess a number between 1 and 10? I might be able to get that right...

| | No, it's yours, Em. For one thing, I'm about to turn into a pumpkin -- see you guys tomorrow night.
And I will definitely check out that review, but not enough time right now. |

| | Darn, I was thinking Iris Murdoch until I noticed the vowel answer. Nice choice Cindy! And don't worry about it. We've all screwed up an answer here or there.
