amykhar has a spectacular aura aboutamykhar has a spectacular aura about
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron

Have you guys seen this one? This is one I would recommend even to people without kids. Throw it on your NetFlix lists and check it out.

It is a Disney animated movie about a wild stallion in the old West. The soundtrack is by Brian Adams, and the story is classic Disney.

That's actually on our list of things to rent next (particularly since everything coming out in the near future just sucks).

Here's some other animated films worth seeing:

Shrek. If you've not seen this, this is a must see. IMHO this is by far the best animated film I've ever seen. It pokes fun at a variety of fairy-tales and is full of laughs, has a great love story, and the animation is just awesome.

Monsters, Inc.. A very funny film despite the fact that Billy Crystal is in it. This is a story from the monsters' POV about the monster in the closet and a little girl that isn't scared of the monster.

Ice Age. Not as funny as you'd hope, but a good movie nonetheless. It's about a wooly mammoth, sloth and sabre-tooth tiger who try to reunite a human baby with his tribe. The funniest parts have to do with the squirrel and his acorn or the dodo birds.

I've heard nothing but good things about Disney's Treasure Planet that is out in theaters now. Haven't seen it though, and the trailers look corny.

Wow! Are we seeing the same trailers? Treasure Planet is definitely on my list of things to see. My husband has been reading Treasure Island to our 4-year-old in preparation. They've both been running around singing "Fifteen Men in a Dead Man's Chest, Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum!"

I agree with the assessment of Spirit. It was definitely an entertaining, feel-good movie. My son loved it and cheered out loud several times.

Shrug. Maybe I'm just put-off by Disney stealing another wonderful story and creating something similar... I loved Treasure Island -- loved the book, loved the movies that were made, etc. Treasure Planet seems to be a rip-off of it... they're saying it's based on the book he wrote, but I've done an Amazon.com search and come up with nothing called "Treasure Planet" by Robt. Louis Stevenson.

Re: Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron

I am not a huge fan of "Spirit" - but mainly because it seemd as though the whole movie was revealed in the trailer. It was harmless enough, and my kids thought it was OK. But people with kids who love horses will probably like it a lot more than my kids.

As my daughter would point out to you, this was a Dreamworks SKG film, not a Disney film. For some odd reason, my daughter has memorized what studio made what film. She's been doing that since she was 4, and she can guess by the animation even if she hasn't seen the logo.

There must be a story here...one I have not heard. What could B.C. have done to upset you so...:-?)

Billy Crystal is annoying. At least, that's the reason he's on my list with Gilbert Godfried. Gah!!!

They make me cringe.

That's my reason. Dunno Jeff's reasons.

No, actually these are my reasons, too.

I liked the story of "City Slickers" and "When Harry Met Sally." Every other film that Crystal has done has been, at best, annoying, along with his voice, just like Gilbert.

Would "Spirit" have anything that might be even remotely distressing or frightening to a 4 year old? I need a movie for the babysitter Friday night, and need something that is engaging for the kids, yet totally innocuous. Sad stuff doesn't usually bother Erin, but she does like to pretend that she's frightened of even mildly scary stuff. If you don't know how to play her off just right, though, she actually will get upset, and the babysitter isn't likely to know just the right touch.

Hes' been good in some supporting roles, as in The Princess Bride. His small part in This Is Spinal Tap is pretty funny.

I once knew someone who knew him personally, and that person had nothing good to say about Mr. Crystal.

I've always thought his TV work and stand up were pretty good.

Well, maybe it might be too late for you, but for those who have yet to get it from Netflix - be forewarned that some of the capture sequences might be frightening or intense for kids under about age 7 or 8. (If they're that age, and sensitive, they might still be scared.)

I feel strongly that it's primarily an animation-fan thing. The plot is predictable at best, and the small amounts of dialog written into the script are actually unnecessary, by and large. There is almost no screen time devoted to people talking to each other; most of the dialog is actually narration, and you don't need it - the horses do their own "talking" through facial expressions and "body language."

End of mini-review (yes, I've posted one already on Epinions.com).
