The Titanic Song

Don't ask me how, but I got the Titanic song stuck in my head. It was a song we always sang at summer camp, and sometimes in girl scouts.

Anyway, my memory was fuzzy on some parts, so I searched the internet for the version I remember. It doesn't seem to exist.

Do any of you remember your versions well enough?

Here's what I remember of my version:

Oh they built the ship Titanic
to sail the ocean blue
and they thought they built it well
and the water would not leak through...

[forgotten verse(s)]

Chorus:
It was sad when the great ship went down (went down!)

It was sad (so sad!)
It was sad (too bad!!)
It was sad when the great ship went down (to the bottom of the...)

Husbands and wives,
Little children lost their lives
it was sad when the great ship went down (went down!)

[forgotten verse(s)]

Chorus

Uncles and aunts
All the children lost their pants
It was sad when the great ship went down (went down!)

Oh the moral of the story,
as you can plainly see
Is to always wear clean undies
when you are out at sea

[possible forgotten verse]

It was sad when the great ship went down -- Kerplunk!

The verses I found online had mentions of God in them, or had morals having to do with class distinctions. The version we sang was more crass.

I hope someone remembers more than I do, and happened to hear the same version I did.

This is making me think I should write down the words for "Boboski Waton Toten" and all the other songs we used to sing.

I thought you meant the Celine Dion one - Thanks heavens!!!!

Okay:

Oh they built the ship Titanic
to sail the ocean blue
And they thougth it had the power of a broken down canoe
So they loaded it with beer
and it fell right of the pier
It was sad when the brave ship went down

It was sad, it was sad, it was sad
too bad
It was sad when the brave ship went down
loaded up with councelors and campers
little children lost their pampers
It was sad when the brave ship went down.

We didn't sing that one at camp, but my best friend did.
Stupid version.

Oh my! I remember I totally different version from both of these.

Oh, they built the ship Titanic
To sail the ocean blue.
A sadder ship the waters never knew.
She was on her maiden trip
When an iceburg hit the ship.
It was sad when the great ship went down.

Oh it was sad,
it was sad, too bad.
It was sad when the great ship went down
To the bottom of the...
Husbands and wives, little kiddies lost their lives,
It was sad when the great ship went down.

OK, here's where I forget most of it, but, I just did a Google search on my camp and the site I found has the rest of the words! Amazing!

Quote:
Oh they were not far from England, they were not far from shore
When the rich refused to associate with the poor,
so they put them down below where they'd be the first to go.
It was sad when the great ship went down.

Chorus

They threw the lifeboats over, into the roaring sea
and the band struck up with Nearer my God to Thee,
Little children screamed and cried as the water rushed over the side.
It was sad when the great ship went down.

Chorus

The moral of this story is full of ginger ale
and if you are rich you should not be so frail,
for in the good Lord's eyes, you're the same as other guys.
It was sad when the great ship went down.

Chorus
I think I'm going to go explore this camp web site!

Cindy
humming "We are a bunch of girls, made out of fun and curls"

This song got me thinking about a lot of the songs I used to sing as a kid. Perhaps it would be fun to not only try to recall our versions of the titanic song, but other songs as well.

So, here's one of my favorites. It had hand movements that I barely remember. However, it was my favorite to hang upside down on the jungle gym and play with my best friend Mary Ann.

"Bobo"

Boboski waton tauton
ant-ah, ant-ah
boom boom boom

Boboski waton tauton
aht-ah, ant-ah
boom boom boom

Itty bitty waton tauton
boboski waton tauton
Freeze, please!
Dont' say cheese or you'll make me sneeze.

CHEESE

Achoo!
Achoo -achoo -achoo!

The other one I used to hang upside down and do the hand movements to was (forgive me for not knowing Spanish) Uno Dos Siesta. I'm not sure the last word is really Siesta. The words never made sense to me as a kid, and that's the closest I can get to something that sort of makes sense in Spanish to me.

Anyway, here it is:

Uno Dos Siesta
Said a East, a West
I met my boyfriend at the candy store
He bought me ice cream
He bought me cake
He brought me home with a tummy ache

Mama, Mama, I'm so sick
Call the doctor
Quick, Quick, QUICK!

Doctor, Doctor, will I die?
Count to five and you'll be alive.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5
I'm alive!

This song was one of the highlights of my 'Sink For Your Supper' tour several years ago. It always brought tears to the eyes of the audience and at least one call for an encore.
