Book Reviewers and the Authors Who Hate Them

I was very amused this morning on the train to read a letter to the editor of the Atlantic Monthly by Fred Kaplan responding to Christopher Hitchens's review of Kaplan's The Singular Mark Twain.

Both the letter to the editor and Hitchens's response to it are worth reading for amusement value.

(The letter in question is more than halfway down the page.)

Boomerang is right. I'm glad not to be in Kaplan's shoes (particularly when he reads the response).

..
Totally off topic but . . . .

That Columbia article (linked at the top of the page with the above story) was fascinating (albeit long) reading. If you're into blow-by-blow, minute-by-minute accounting of disasters and the aftermath. Beats watching the next political debate.

I learned long ago not to write letters to the editor about bad reviews. You're just setting yourself up for being pilloried.
