I don't think they are joking and I don't get the big problem with it. The premise is the first reality-contest show idea I've heard that might serve a greater purpose. Everyone who reads a newspaper thinks they could do a better job than that jackasses who are really running. Let 'em see what a campaign is really like-and let the rest of us see just how hard it is to be heard and persuade people to give you their vote.

Judging by the kind of jackasses that flock to be on most reality shows, I'm not sure this will be any kind of education or improvement.

Re: Meet the newest "reality" show - American Candidate

Since the casting call emphasizes leadership, vision and passion, I'll give them a benefit of the doubt that they're not looking for someone willing to eat a sheep's eyeball.

I also like it that R.J. Culter ("War Room") is the executive producer. And this is on Showtime, so it doesn't have to have the lowest-common denominator direction needed to win a timeslot on broadcast TV.

I understand what you're saying, and no one detests the brainless drivel of "reality TV" more than I do. But this looks like it could be the exception to the rule.

Also, folks aren't promised anything but the chance to run, which will hopefully discourage those just in it for the money.

Re: Meet the newest "reality" show - American Candidate

Very interesting. I think it would hold a lot more promise, however, if this were shown on a flagship network of Viacom's (like CBS) instead of a minute network (like Showtime).

Showtime's audience is limited and the demographic of who watches it is too small. You're likely not going to find a candidate who will appeal to the masses from that sort of forum -- you're going to find a candidate who will appeal to the demographic that subscribes to Showtime.

I commend them for their ingenuity.
